Season 1 is an eight-episode drama from 2026, it is streaming only on Netflix, and Netflix has confirmed a second season.
What the new series is
The Netflix show is built on Wilder’s semi-autobiographical Little House books. Netflix announced it on January 29, 2025, and the official Little House franchise site reported the announcement the next day. Rebecca Sonnenshine is the showrunner and creator, and she also serves as an executive producer. CBS Studios and Anonymous Content Studios are named as production partners.
Sonnenshine has said of the source material: “I fell deeply in love with these books when I was five years old,” according to the franchise announcement. Trip Friendly, CEO of Friendly Family Productions and an executive producer, framed the project as a way to “carry on my father’s legacy and adapt Wilder’s classic American stories for a 21st-century audience in a way that brings together fans of both the books and the original television series.” Jinny Howe, Netflix vice president of drama series, said the company wanted to share the show’s “enduring themes of hope and optimism with a fresh take on this iconic story.”
Because it is a scripted drama, it is not a documentary. Readers who want the historical background will find more in the books and in the franchise’s own materials than in the series itself.

How the new series differs from the original
The three versions of this story (the books, the 1974–1983 NBC series, and the Netflix adaptation) are easy to confuse. The table below separates them.
| Version | Format and length | Basis and approach |
|---|---|---|
| Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House books | Book series | Semi-autobiographical accounts of the author’s childhood on the frontier |
| Original NBC series (1974–1983) | Nine seasons and more than 200 episodes, according to the franchise announcement | Television production; not the basis of the Netflix show |
| Netflix adaptation (2026) | Eight episodes in Season 1; Season 2 renewed | New adaptation of the books; Season 1 set in Kansas, with the family arriving from Wisconsin, according to Netflix’s episode descriptions |
The Netflix version should not be read as an episode-by-episode remake of the NBC series. Its own published descriptions describe a different story arc, including an Osage community and a tribal council tied to the fate of the land.

Osage and Indigenous perspectives
Netflix says the production consulted Osage and Indigenous experts and included Indigenous citizens as actors and crew. Julie O’Keefe, the show’s Osage cultural consultant, said in Netflix’s July 2026 announcement: “We all know that that story is so much richer with all of our voices in it.”
AP’s coverage describes the series’ attention to Osage neighbors, land ownership, and treaties. This is best understood as a production and storytelling choice. It is not a claim that the show is a full historical record of the period.

In AP’s reporting, Sonnenshine described the frontier ideal of self-reliance this way: “This idea of rugged individualism is the cornerstone of American mythos.” That framing is central to how the series is pitched.
The numbers behind the franchise
- Book sales: More than 73 million copies sold in over 100 countries and translated into at least 27 languages. These figures come from the franchise’s own January 2025 announcement, not an independent audit.
- Original series: Nine seasons and more than 200 episodes, 1974–1983, on NBC. This is the original television production, not the Netflix show.
- Viewing on Peacock: 13.25 billion minutes viewed in 2024, attributed to Nielsen and reported in the same 2025 franchise announcement. This is a Peacock figure, not a Netflix one.
- Greenlight: Netflix announced the series on January 29, 2025.
What is still unknown
- The Season 2 release date.
- The exact Season 1 premiere day.
- Whether availability is identical in every country.
