KAOS is Netflix’s contemporary reworking of Greek mythology, with Jeff Goldblum playing Zeus as a stylish, powerful ruler whose fear of an ancient prophecy threatens both Olympus and humanity. The eight-episode series follows mortals drawn into the struggle over his power. Variety reported in October 2024 that Netflix canceled the show after one season.
What is KAOS about?
Netflix describes KAOS as a contemporary twist on Greek mythology. Created by Charlie Covell, the series places Zeus’s paranoia and a group of mortals destined to reshape humanity at the center of its story. Netflix’s official overview describes Zeus as determined to keep his power and contemptuous of humans. Netflix’s series guide
Covell has said that a childhood interest in Greek mythology inspired the modern retelling. Netflix attributes this guiding question to the creator: “What if the king of the gods was having a midlife crisis? What would that look like?” Netflix Tudum
Why is Zeus afraid of a wrinkle?
Zeus’s crisis begins with a wrinkle on his forehead. He fears it signals that an ancient prophecy about the Olympians losing power is coming true. Netflix’s character guide describes him as egomaniacal and paranoid: as he tries to secure his rule, he makes dangerous enemies and takes actions that put humanity at risk. Netflix’s character guide

Goldblum’s own description, quoted in Netflix’s promotional coverage, is: “Our Zeus is the three c’s — complicated, charismatic, [and] cruel.” He also told Netflix Tudum: “My character is complicated and charismatic, not to mention cruel.” These are the actor’s character descriptions, not independent critical judgments. Which mortals challenge Zeus?
The conflict is not limited to the gods. Netflix names Riddy (Aurora Perrineau), Orpheus (Killian Scott), Caneus (Misia Butler), and Ari (Leila Farzad) among the mortals connected to the fight against Zeus. The official summaries group the central mortals differently, so these names are a more reliable guide than treating the ensemble as a fixed-number team. How does the series rework Greek mythology?
KAOS brings familiar mythic material into a contemporary setting, but it spreads the story across several worlds rather than following one hero or one myth. TIME’s review describes an interwoven narrative spanning the heavens, mortal Krete, and a corporate-looking Underworld, and characterizes its tone as a blend of comedy and political thriller. Those are the critic’s descriptions, not official genre definitions. TIME’s review
That broad ensemble is part of the adaptation’s approach: the story gives space to Olympus, mortal politics, and the Underworld. TIME notes that the many characters take time to introduce and that the finale can feel like a preface to a continuation. Those are critical assessments of the series’ pacing and ending.
