The series draws on the real seven-day crisis, but it is fictionalized—not a documentary record—so its scenes should not be treated as proof of exactly what happened.
1. What is the Netflix series IC 814 about?
IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack is a 2024 limited series with six episodes. Netflix lists Anubhav Sinha and Trishant Shrivastava as creators and names Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur and Vijay Varma among its stars. Netflix announced that the series launched on August 29, 2024. Netflix’s India title page has the listing, while Netflix’s announcement gives the launch date.
The listed episode runtimes are 44, 45, 41, 52, 48 and 33 minutes. Netflix’s catalog currently lists English, Hindi audio description, Hindi original, Tamil and Telugu audio, with English and Hindi subtitles. Catalog details and availability can vary by country and change over time, so check the listing in your region.
2. What happened to Indian Airlines Flight 814?
On December 24, 1999, Indian Airlines Flight IC 814 was travelling from Kathmandu to New Delhi when five masked hijackers took control. Netflix’s Tudum background article reports that the plane made unplanned stops in Amritsar, Lahore and Dubai before flying to Kandahar, Afghanistan, then under Taliban rule.

The plane landed in Dubai on December 25. According to The Indian Express’s account of the crisis, 27 passengers were released there and Rupin Katyal’s body was off-loaded. The aircraft then continued to Kandahar, where it remained through the end of the hijacking.
3. How did the seven-day hijacking end?
The crisis ended on December 31, 1999, after seven days. The Indian Express account says India released three prisoners in Kandahar as part of the resolution. Its chronology draws on a parliamentary statement made by then External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh on March 1, 2000. The negotiations and decisions unfolded over several days; reducing the outcome to a single cause would oversimplify the account.

4. Is IC 814 based on a true story?
Yes: the series takes its subject from the real hijacking, but Netflix describes it as fictionalized. That distinction matters. The route, crisis and broad outcome are historical events; dialogue, scene construction and other dramatic choices in the series are not automatically verified historical details.
Netflix Tudum says the adaptation is based on Flight into Fear: A Captain’s Story by Captain Devi Sharan and Srinjoy Chowdhury. The book is a useful next read for the story behind the adaptation, but readers should check detailed historical claims against reliable reporting and primary records rather than treating either the series or its dramatic scenes as a documentary transcript.

5. What were the hijackers’ aliases?
A January 6, 2000 statement by India’s Union Home Minister says passengers knew the hijackers by the names “Chief,” “Doctor,” “Burger,” “Bhola” and “Shankar.” The statement is hosted by the Ministry of External Affairs: the government statement on the IC 814 hijacking. The aliases identify how the hijackers were referred to in that account; they do not, by themselves, establish religion or ethnicity.
