The Netflix documentary behind the “climbing up the charts” headline is How to Rob a Bank, a 2024 film about Seattle bank robber Scott Scurlock. It ranked No. 5 among Netflix movies in the United States when BGR reported on it on June 11, 2024; that dated snapshot does not establish its current chart position.
What is How to Rob a Bank about?
Netflix describes the documentary as the story of a charismatic figure in 1990s Seattle who robbed banks using Hollywood-style disguises. According to Netflix Tudum, Scurlock and Steve Meyers robbed at least 19 banks between 1992 and 1996 and stole $2.3 million. Those figures are Netflix Tudum’s account of the events.
Why the film is more than a heist story
The directors, Stephen Robert Morse and Seth Porges, frame the documentary around the stories people tell about themselves and the cost of pursuing freedom. Netflix Tudum quotes them: “This film is not just about the logistics of bank robbery. To us, it is about our awesome capacity as people to self-mythologize and our unending thirst for freedom — no matter the cost,”

That framing shifts attention from the mechanics of the robberies to the people drawn into them: Scurlock, those around him, and the investigators working to stop the crimes.
