Netflix’s Hostage is the political thriller this headline points to—but it has already premiered. Tom’s Guide lists its Netflix start date as August 21, 2025. The five-episode limited series stars Suranne Jones and Julie Delpy as leaders forced to confront a kidnapping, blackmail and threats to their political futures.
What is Netflix’s Hostage about?
During an international summit, British Prime Minister Abigail Dalton, played by Suranne Jones, faces a personal crisis when her husband is kidnapped. At the same time, visiting French President Vivienne Toussaint, played by Julie Delpy, is being blackmailed. Netflix’s description says the leaders must work together against a shared enemy while their political futures are at stake.

Dalton’s dilemma is especially stark: she must weigh giving up power to get her husband back against refusing to negotiate and risking his life. The premise puts family pressure and political calculation in the same frame, rather than treating the crisis as a conventional diplomatic dispute.
Why compare it with The Diplomat?
The comparison is about the appeal of high-stakes leadership and government politics, not a shared story world. Netflix describes The Diplomat as a drama about an American ambassador to the United Kingdom navigating diplomacy, political alliances and a strained marriage. Hostage instead centers on a British prime minister and a French president confronting kidnapping and blackmail during an international summit.
