The date is in the past, not an upcoming release. Netflix’s July preview and Moviepilot’s April announcement also gave July 17 as the release date. Those announcements do not identify a superseded date, so the claim that the finale arrived “far later than expected” cannot be verified from them. That does not prove no earlier expectation existed; it means the available announcements do not substantiate a postponement.
What is Heartstopper Forever about?
The film continues Nick and Charlie’s story as they face the transition beyond school. Nick is preparing to leave for university, while Charlie is finding greater independence at school. Netflix frames the question of whether their relationship can withstand the changes ahead as the central tension.

Series creator Alice Oseman wrote the film, and Wash Westmoreland directed it, according to Netflix’s title page. The page lists a runtime of 1 hour 54 minutes and a TV-MA rating. Netflix identifies Oseman’s graphic novels and the novella Nick and Charlie as source material.
In a Netflix Tudum preview published July 15, 2026, Oseman explained the opening choice: “It took us a long time to figure out where to start. What does Heartstopper’s 98% score mean?
The 98% is the series’ Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score, not a score assigned by Netflix. On October 8, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes showed that score from 144 critic reviews. Its separate Popcornmeter audience score was 95% from more than 5,000 ratings. These are an accessed snapshot; scores and counts can change. See the Rotten Tomatoes series page.
Rotten Tomatoes listed three seasons, with Tomatometer scores of 100% for Season 1, 96% for Season 2 and 100% for Season 3 at the same access. These figures describe the aggregator’s review scores, not viewing figures or a guarantee of how any individual viewer will respond.

Why did Netflix end the series with a film?
The available announcements confirm the format but do not explain Netflix’s reason for choosing a film instead of a fourth season. A format decision should not be treated as evidence of cancellation circumstances, audience decline or any other specific cause without a confirmed explanation.
For context, Forbes reported on July 25, 2026, that the film had not appeared on the US or global Netflix Top 10 movie lists at that point, though it had briefly charted in the UK. The article’s suggestions about promotion and viewing trends were analysis, not a confirmed explanation from Netflix. A dated chart observation also cannot establish why Netflix chose the film format.
