Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer is a three-episode Netflix documentary released March 31, 2025. It revisits the Gilgo Beach investigation through the lives of the women, their families, and the police response. The headline’s “new #1” claim should not be read as a verified current ranking: a chart roundup reported a No. 2 debut for the week of March 31–April 6, 2025, while the official Netflix pages do not establish a present-day No. 1 position.
What is Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer about?
The series returns to the investigation that began drawing wide attention in 2010, when police searching for a missing woman found 10 sets of human remains along a barrier-island parkway near Gilgo Beach. Investigators used DNA analysis and other clues to identify victims and connect some remains found elsewhere on Long Island, according to the Associated Press timeline.
Netflix frames the documentary around the victims and the people who knew them, as well as the law-enforcement response. It includes interviews with journalists, police officials, and friends and family members of victims and the accused. Director Liz Garbus has said she wanted the women’s lives to be seen beyond assumptions about sex work. Netflix’s director interview and series coverage includes her description of families who kept pressing for attention to the case.
The investigation’s institutional response and the stigma surrounding the women are part of the story, not just background to a criminal case. Netflix’s synopsis describes a major break after 13 years; that is the platform’s summary of the case timeline, not a claim that every death or identification connected to the broader investigation was resolved.

How many episodes are there, and what do they cover?
Netflix lists the 2025 documentary as TV-MA with three episodes, running 49, 56, and 53 minutes. The episode summaries move from the discovery of multiple unidentified bodies during a missing-woman search, to a renewed search for Shannan Gilbert amid a police-corruption scandal, and then to a long-overlooked tip that led to an arrest. See the Netflix title page for the episode listings and trailer.
What happened after the documentary?
The series premiered in 2025, before the case’s later court outcome. On April 8, 2026, Rex Heuermann pleaded guilty to seven murders and admitted killing an eighth woman, the Associated Press reported. On June 17, 2026, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole. The plea distinction matters: he pleaded guilty to seven murders and admitted to the eighth, rather than entering eight guilty pleas. Read the AP timeline and court update for the legal developments.

Have all the Gilgo Beach deaths and identities been resolved?
No. Heuermann’s plea and sentence addressed his admitted killings, but they did not resolve every death or identification associated with the wider Long Island investigation. Netflix’s victim update says some remains remain unidentified. It also reports that Tanya Denise Jackson and her daughter, Tatiana Marie Dykes, were identified in April 2025 after their bodies were found near Gilgo Beach in 2011.
Is it Netflix’s current No. 1 show?
The available official Netflix pages establish the documentary’s release, format, and subject, but do not verify that it is currently No. 1. A ranking needs a date, territory, and metric; a reported No. 2 debut for the week of March 31–April 6, 2025 is a historical chart position, not evidence of its present standing. Treat “new #1” as headline wording rather than a confirmed current ranking.
