Netflix’s Devil May Cry is an animated adaptation of Capcom’s stylish-action game franchise, following orphaned demon hunter Dante as a threat links the human and demon realms. It premiered on April 3, 2025. The series has plenty of kinetic spectacle and a willingness to reshape familiar lore; its most noticeable drawback is that some 3D imagery sits awkwardly beside the 2D animation.
What kind of Devil May Cry is this?
The series puts Dante in a conflict involving forces trying to open a portal between the human and demon realms. Adi Shankar is the showrunner and creative lead, and Studio Mir handled the animation. The adaptation is not a retelling of the games’ interactive experience: it uses their characters and mythology to build a linear action story, with room for new interpretations of familiar lore.
That distinction matters if you come to the show as a fan. GameSpot reviewer Darryn Bonthuys, who rated the first season 9/10 and disclosed receiving a Netflix screener, praised the series’ action, voice cast, soundtrack, and some of its lore choices. The points below reflect those specific critical observations, not a claim about audience consensus.
Five things we liked
1. It takes creative risks with familiar lore
The series does more than reproduce game references. GameSpot’s review praised what it called clever, subtle twists on the franchise’s lore, including questions about Sparda’s rebellion and what motivates demons. Those choices give the show room to make the mythology feel like part of its own story rather than a checklist of callbacks.

2. The action has a big, deliberate rhythm
The fights lean into theatrical staging and comic-book exaggeration. GameSpot singled out a dance-floor fight set to Rage Against the Machine’s “Guerrilla Radio” and a highway chase accompanied by Papa Roach’s “Last Resort.” The scenes aim for momentum and personality as much as straightforward combat choreography.
3. The soundtrack gives it a distinct tone
Rock and nu-metal tracks are woven into the show’s action and its early-2000s, summer-blockbuster sensibility. In GameSpot’s assessment, the music helps make the set pieces feel larger and more specific to this adaptation, rather than serving as background texture alone.

4. The voice performances bring out character contrasts
Johnny Yong Bosch’s Dante can project effortless cool and self-aware goofiness in the same performance, a contrast that plays well against Lady. GameSpot also praised Kevin Conroy’s measured delivery as Vice President Baines and Hoon Lee’s characterization of White Rabbit. Together, those performances give the story more tonal range than its action-forward premise might suggest.
5. It makes room for character history
The season does not stay at full speed throughout. GameSpot highlighted Lady’s character arc and the thematic parallels between her and Dante, along with the largely wordless sixth episode’s contrasting visual styles. Those quieter passages give the action emotional context and help make the characters’ histories matter to the present conflict.

Two things we didn’t like
1. Some 3D imagery clashes with the 2D animation
The sharpest criticism in GameSpot’s review is the shift between 2D work and CGI in several episodes. The 3D imagery can look jarring beside the hand-drawn style, interrupting the visual flow of otherwise effective sequences. The issue is the contrast on screen; the review does not establish a cause such as budget or production constraints.
2. The finale’s music-video energy may not suit everyone
GameSpot described the first-season finale as having the feel of an animated music video and noted its cliffhanger ending. That heightened, abrupt mode may be an exciting send-off for viewers who want one more burst of spectacle, but it can feel less satisfying if you prefer a season finale that resolves more of its story. This is a matter of taste, not a universally established flaw.

Is the Devil May Cry anime worth watching?
If you want stylized fights, a prominent rock soundtrack, and a familiar game world that is willing to change its lore, the series has clear strengths. Its character-focused episodes also provide a counterweight to the spectacle. If visual consistency is essential, the 2D-to-3D shifts may distract you; and the finale’s cliffhanger, music-video approach is a less conventional way to close a season.
The show is an adaptation, not a substitute for the games’ interactive combat. You do not need to play them to follow the series, though viewers who know the franchise may get more out of its reinterpretations. Capcom’s announcement lists the English voice cast as Johnny Yong Bosch (Dante), Scout Taylor-Compton (Lady), Robbie Daymond (Vergil), Hoon Lee (White Rabbit), Kevin Conroy (Vice President Baines), and Chris Coppola (Enzo). It also lists Japanese-language performances by Tomoyuki Morikawa (Dante), Fumiko Orikasa (Lady), Hiroaki Hirata (Vergil), Ryotaro Okiayu (White Rabbit), Shogo Nakamura (Baines), and Yuki Matsukawa (Enzo).
