Its familiar fairy-tale ingredients—a princess, a kingdom and a spell—set up a more personal problem: Princess Ellian must try to save her family after her parents are transformed into monsters.
What is Spellbound about?
Ellian is the tenacious young daughter of Lumbria’s rulers. When a mysterious spell transforms her parents, the king and queen, into monsters, she sets out to save her family and kingdom. Netflix’s official synopsis gives that central premise; its expanded story guide places the upheaval around Ellian’s fifteenth birthday and explores the consequences for the family.

The setup deliberately draws on recognizable fairy-tale conventions, but Jenson has described those conventions as a way into the family story. “If we start with the familiar — the kingdom, a princess, a king, a queen, and a spell — we could use that to express the story of this family,” she told Netflix Tudum.
Who made the film?
Vicky Jenson directed Spellbound; Netflix’s materials associate her with Shrek. The film’s writing credits are Lauren Hynek, Elizabeth Martin and Julia Miranda. John Lasseter, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Bruce Anderson are credited as producers for Skydance Animation.
