The Arthurian characters in Netflix’s Cursed include Nimue, Arthur, Merlin, Gawain (the Green Knight), and Uther Pendragon. Season one also reveals that Sister Igraine is Morgana, Squirrel is Perceval, the Weeping Monk is Lancelot, and the Red Spear is Guinevere. The series is a reimagining, so its characters and relationships do not always match any one version of Arthurian legend.
How Cursed reshapes Arthurian legend
Netflix’s ten-episode Cursed adapts the illustrated YA book by Frank Miller and Tom Wheeler, but shifts the story’s center from Arthur to Nimue. She is a Fey teenager associated with the Lady of the Lake who takes up the Sword of Power and sets out to find Merlin. Arthur begins as a young mercenary, while Nimue’s people face persecution from the Red Paladins and the rule of King Uther. Netflix’s announcement of the series outlines the premise and book’s creators; the official Netflix listing provides episode descriptions.

The principal Arthurian characters
Nimue, the Lady of the Lake
Nimue is the protagonist and the lens through which the series revisits the legend. Netflix describes her as destined to become the powerful, tragic Lady of the Lake. In the show, she is Fey, has powerful and sometimes uncontrollable magic, and wields the Sword of Power before Arthur’s familiar adventures. Rather than beginning with the image of the Lady handing Arthur a sword, Cursed builds an origin story around the woman who held it first. Netflix’s series announcement and the Los Angeles Times interview with the creators describe this approach.
Arthur
Arthur is a young mercenary trying to prove himself while carrying family debts, not a king whose legendary status is already secure. The Los Angeles Times notes that the series also departs from the familiar account of Arthur’s parentage. His role is therefore best understood through this adaptation’s story rather than assumed from a particular traditional genealogy. The interview discusses the differences.

Merlin
Nimue’s mission is to find Merlin and deliver the sword to him. The series presents him as a troubled, diminished wizard who has lost the use of magic and lives under Uther’s rule. That is a sharp contrast with the wise and powerful magical guide familiar from many Arthur stories. The Los Angeles Times describes the series’ take on Merlin.
Gawain, the Green Knight
Gawain is also known as the Green Knight. He grew up in Nimue’s Fey village and serves as a protector of the Fey; Netflix’s episode descriptions also place him alongside Arthur in the conflict with the Weeping Monk. The show’s characterization should not be treated as a definitive account of every legendary Green Knight or Gawain. Netflix’s episode descriptions and the Los Angeles Times profile establish his role in the series.
Uther Pendragon
Uther is the reigning king and an antagonist in the political struggle surrounding Nimue and the Fey. Netflix’s premise describes him as complicit with the Red Paladins; the episode summaries show him in conflict with Merlin and making decisions as the Fey face danger. Although Uther is a familiar Arthurian name, Cursed does not simply reproduce the traditional father-son relationship: the Los Angeles Times specifically notes that the show’s account of Arthur’s parentage differs from the common one. Netflix’s premise, episode summaries, and the interview describe these elements.

- Sister Igraine is Morgana. The series reveals that Igraine is Arthur’s sister, Morgana, a character commonly associated with Morgan le Fay.
- Squirrel is Perceval. The young Fey boy’s identity connects him to the figure associated with the Grail quest.
- The Weeping Monk is Lancelot. Initially presented as a weapon raised by the Red Paladins against the Fey, he is revealed to be Fey and to have formerly been known as Lancelot. This answers the question of whether the Weeping Monk is Lancelot: yes, in the series.
- The Red Spear is Guinevere. The Viking captain is revealed as Guinevere, presented as a warrior with a story of her own.

Cursed is a reimagining, not a scene-by-scene rendering of one authoritative Arthurian canon. For example, accounts of the Lady of the Lake vary: she may give Arthur a sword, raise Lancelot, imprison Merlin, accompany Arthur to Avalon, or advise Arthur, depending on the telling. The Los Angeles Times notes that the character has been portrayed both positively and negatively. TheWrap likewise observes that Cursed does not always follow the familiar mythological stories attached to its character names. Los Angeles Times; TheWrap.

When comparing the show with a retelling or tradition, keep four questions separate:
- Identity: Is the character introduced under another name before an Arthurian identity is revealed?
- Role: What does the character do in Cursed, and how does that differ from the specific source or adaptation being compared?
- Relationships: Are parentage and family connections the same in both versions?
- Narrative role: Has the show moved a familiar figure into a different gender, political, or story role?
Co-creator Frank Miller told the Los Angeles Times, “Nimue is the key to it all.” Co-creator Tom Wheeler explained that the image of a woman’s arm reaching from the water to offer Arthur the sword “evokes all of these interesting questions.” These remarks describe the creators’ approach, rather than establishing a single scholarly interpretation of the legend.
