The producer rejected the accusation, according to ANTARA, saying the series was based on a webtoon of the same name that began in 2016. Netflix also identifies a webtoon as the show’s source. Those facts confirm the reported dispute and the stated source work; they do not establish that plagiarism occurred.
What prompted the accusation?
ANTARA reported on May 17, 2023, that some gamers accused Black Knight of copying Death Stranding after the series premiered the previous week. The report said the producer rejected the charge on May 16, explaining that the show was based on Lee Yun Kyun’s webtoon of the same name. ANTARA printed the producer’s statement in Indonesian; translated into English, it says: “Black Knight was produced based on a webtoon of the same name by Lee Yun Kyun, which began in 2016.” This is a translation of the statement as reported by ANTARA, not an English-language verbatim quote. Netflix’s own production announcement independently describes the series as based on the Toomics webtoon Black Knight, written by Lee Yoon-gyun. Netflix later referred to the source webtoon as Delivery Knight; its materials establish a naming discrepancy, not that these are separate works. Why did viewers compare the series with the game?
Both official descriptions place delivery at the center of survival in a devastated future. Netflix describes Black Knight as set in Korea in 2071, after a comet strike and amid severe scarcity. Its couriers, called knights, deliver oxygen and other necessities in a society where access to resources is controlled. The story follows a refugee who hopes to become a knight. PlayStation’s official synopsis for Death Stranding follows Sam Bridges as he carries supplies and works to reconnect a ravaged society. Kojima Productions says the game launched for PlayStation 4 in November 2019, with a Windows release in 2020. These official premises support a broad comparison around couriers, deliveries and a fractured future. Shared themes or genre conventions alone do not show that one work copied the other. Does the available evidence prove plagiarism?
No. The sources establish that an accusation was reported, that the producer denied it, and that Netflix identifies a webtoon as the series’ source. They do not offer a scene-by-scene comparison, an expert analysis, or a court finding. The cited sources also do not include a response from Kojima Productions or Sony to this particular accusation.
A careful comparison would need to look beyond the general idea of delivery in a dystopian setting. Relevant questions include whether specific scenes, character designs, dialogue or other distinctive visual and narrative choices are substantially alike, and how the chronology and stated source work bear on that comparison. The available reporting and official descriptions do not answer those questions. The allegation should therefore remain an allegation, not be presented as a proven finding.

What did Hideo Kojima say about the game?
In a 2019 PlayStation Blog announcement, Hideo Kojima described Death Stranding as “a completely new type of action game, where the goal is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society.” That statement explains the game’s stated aim; it is not a comment on the later Black Knight allegation.
