Netflix Website Not Loading? A Step-by-Step Fix for Browser, Network, and DNS Problems

A Netflix website failure usually points to an outage, stale site data, browser compatibility, or a local network problem. Follow these safe tests in order to find the cause without prematurely resetting your router or deleting all browser data.

If Netflix will not open, keeps loading, or shows a browser error, start by checking Netflix’s service-status page, then try a private browser window and reset Netflix’s site data. Most cases come from a temporary Netflix interruption, stale cookies or cached data, an outdated or unsupported browser, or a local network problem involving Wi-Fi, DNS, a VPN, proxy, router, or modem.

Work through the steps below in order. The tests are designed to identify the failing layer without unnecessarily deleting all of your browser data or resetting your hardware.

1. Check whether Netflix itself is having an interruption

Before changing your browser or network, open Netflix’s official “Is Netflix Down?” status page. Netflix says it updates that page when it is experiencing an interruption. You can also search the Netflix Help Center for the exact error code or sign in to check your account status.

Do not assume Netflix is down just because the website will not load on your computer. If the status page shows no matching problem, continue with the local troubleshooting steps. If it does show an interruption, wait and try again later rather than repeatedly changing browser and router settings.

2. Verify the address and restart the browser completely

Make sure you are visiting netflix.com, rather than a mistyped address, an old bookmark, or a suspicious lookalike domain. In Chrome, the message “This site can’t be reached” generally means the browser cannot connect to Netflix because of a network-connectivity problem, but checking the address is the correct first step.

  1. Close every Netflix tab or window.
  2. Quit the browser completely—not just the current tab.
  3. Reopen the browser and enter netflix.com manually.
  4. Reload the page with Ctrl+R on Windows or Command+R on macOS.

Netflix’s NSES-UHX guidance also recommends refreshing, restarting the browser, and updating it. A temporary page failure or old browser data can prevent the request from completing.

3. Compare a normal window with a private window

Open an Incognito window in Chrome or Edge, a Private window in Firefox or Safari, and visit netflix.com. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed solution.

  • Netflix works privately but not normally: an extension, cookie, cached file, browser permission, or saved session is a likely cause.
  • Netflix fails in both windows: an outage, unsupported browser, account issue, DNS problem, VPN or proxy, or broader network failure is more likely.

Temporarily consider browser extensions that filter ads, scripts, traffic, or privacy content. Do not install a random “Netflix repair” extension or application. If an extension is the cause, re-enable extensions one at a time after Netflix works so you can identify the conflict.

4. Reset Netflix cookies and site data

The safest first data reset is Netflix’s own cookie-clearing page: netflix.com/clearcookies. Netflix says this action signs you out. Select Sign In, enter your credentials again, and retry the site.

This targets Netflix rather than erasing every login, cookie, and browsing record in your browser. Be sure you know your Netflix email address and password before using it.

Clear Netflix data manually if the page still fails

Browser menus vary slightly by version, but the general path is:

  1. Open the browser’s Settings.
  2. Open Privacy and security or the equivalent section.
  3. Find Cookies, Site data, or See all site data and permissions.
  4. Search for netflix.com.
  5. Remove the Netflix entries, reopen Netflix, and sign in again.

This is especially relevant for errors such as D7371-1204 and M7399-1260-00000025. Netflix’s guidance for these errors focuses on removing Netflix’s cookie or site data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only if the Netflix-specific reset fails should you consider clearing all browsing data. That broader action can remove login sessions and saved site preferences across many websites.

5. Update the browser or switch to a supported one

Netflix currently lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari as supported computer browsers. Its system-requirements guidance lists these minimum browser versions for relevant computer experiences:

Browser Minimum version listed by Netflix
Google Chrome 117 or later
Microsoft Edge 118 or later
Mozilla Firefox 111 or later
Opera 92 or later
Apple Safari 14 or later

Operating-system support also matters. Netflix lists Windows 10 and 11, macOS 10.15.5 or later, ChromeOS 76 or later, and iPadOS 14 or later for the relevant browser-based experiences. Requirements can vary by operating system and device.

If Netflix says “Browser isn’t supported” or shows error E109, update the current browser or try another browser from the supported list. Silverlight is no longer an option: Netflix says support ended on September 13, 2023. A current HTML5-capable browser is required.

Linux users should be aware that Netflix lists supported browser versions but does not guarantee that every Linux configuration will work. Netflix also says Customer Support cannot troubleshoot Linux devices. Testing a current supported browser is reasonable, but distribution-specific fixes may require help from the Linux community or device manufacturer.

6. Restart the modem and router

If Netflix fails in multiple browsers or on more than one device, restart the home network:

  1. Turn off the computer or device you are testing.
  2. Unplug the modem and router from power.
  3. Wait about 30 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the modem first, then the router if they are separate units.
  5. Wait for the connection and status lights to stabilize. Some equipment takes longer than others.
  6. Turn the computer or device back on and try Netflix again.

This can clear a temporary connection or router state. It will not repair an unsupported browser, stale Netflix cookies, a Netflix-side interruption, or an account problem.

7. Check VPN, proxy, DNS, and custom network settings

A VPN, proxy, DNS filter, parental-control service, corporate network policy, or custom modem setting can stop a device from reaching Netflix. If any of these are active, temporarily return the connection to its normal configuration and test again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not permanently replace DNS settings just because one troubleshooting page recommends a particular public DNS provider. First record the original settings, and ask your ISP or device manufacturer for help if you are unsure what they do. Incorrect DNS changes can affect other websites and services.

Netflix says DNS problems can prevent a device from reaching its service. When contacting your ISP, ask it to check access to:

  • secure.netflix.com
  • appboot.netflix.com
  • uiboot.netflix.com
  • fast.com

The ISP can also check DNS behavior on its servers and on your modem, router, and device.

8. Test the connection through Fast.com

Open Fast.com in the same browser and, if possible, on the same network. Netflix identifies Fast.com as a way to test internet speed and the connection directly to Netflix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Fast.com also fails to load: a general internet, DNS, router, ISP, or filtering problem is more likely.
  • Fast.com loads but Netflix does not: the issue may be Netflix cookies, browser compatibility, an extension, authentication, or a more specific DNS or filtering rule.
  • Fast.com is unusually slow on several devices: contact the ISP after restarting the modem and router.

A successful speed test does not prove that Netflix cookies, browser permissions, account authentication, or every Netflix endpoint are working correctly. It is useful evidence, not a complete diagnosis.

9. Test another network—and, if possible, a cable

Try Netflix on a phone hotspot or another trusted connection. If it works on the alternate network, the home router, ISP, DNS, filtering, VPN, or proxy path becomes the leading suspect. If it fails everywhere, focus on the browser, device, account, or Netflix service status.

A temporary wired test can separate weak or interfering Wi-Fi from broader connectivity problems. Connect the computer or streaming device directly to the router and retry Netflix. If the wired connection works while Wi-Fi does not, investigate Wi-Fi signal strength, interference, router placement, and wireless configuration.

10. Match the fix to the error message

“This site can’t be reached”
Verify netflix.com, then check the connection, restart the browser, and test Fast.com. Netflix associates this Chrome message with a network-connectivity problem preventing Chrome from reaching Netflix.
“Netflix is Currently Unavailable”
Netflix associates this with an app that needs an update or a network issue. In a browser, clear Netflix site data, restart the browser, and test Netflix and Fast.com on the same network.
“Browser isn’t supported” or E109
Update the browser or switch to a supported browser. Check the operating-system requirements as well.
D7371-1204
Restart the browser and remove the Netflix cookie. Clear all browsing data only as a later step because it removes login data and other site information.
M7399-1260-00000025
Clear Netflix site data or cookies, particularly the Netflix entries in Chrome’s site-data settings.
BLOCKED or HTTP ERROR 403
Close all Netflix tabs and windows and try again. If the error persists, Netflix says it may temporarily be unable to connect your account to its service. Retry later or contact Netflix.
NSES-UHX
Refresh the page, restart the browser, and update it. Contact Netflix if the error keeps returning.

What not to do

  • Do not assume there is an outage without checking Netflix’s current status information.
  • Do not disable antivirus protection as a first-line fix.
  • Do not install unofficial “Netflix repair” software or browser extensions.
  • Do not change DNS permanently without recording the old settings or consulting your ISP.
  • Do not factory-reset a TV, router, or streaming box early in the process; a reset can erase settings without addressing the real cause.
  • Do not assume clearing cookies preserves your login. Netflix’s clear-cookies action signs you out.

When to contact the ISP, device manufacturer, or Netflix

Contact your ISP when:

  • Several devices on the same home network cannot reach Netflix.
  • Fast.com also fails or is unusually slow.
  • The problem began after a router, DNS, VPN, proxy, or filtering change.
  • A wired test works but Wi-Fi does not, or the connection repeatedly drops.

Ask the ISP to check local outages, router or modem faults, DNS resolution, and access to Netflix’s listed endpoints.

Contact the device manufacturer when:

The problem is limited to one TV, streaming box, or computer and appears related to firmware, a Smart Hub or equivalent interface, or a factory-reset procedure. Netflix directs users to manufacturers for device firmware updates and device-specific reset assistance.

Contact Netflix when:

The status page shows no matching interruption, the browser is supported and current, Netflix site data has been cleared, and the problem continues across more than one network. Have the exact error code, browser and version, operating system, device, Wi-Fi or wired connection type, and completed troubleshooting steps ready.

Optional Windows maintenance—not a Netflix-specific fix

If Netflix is working after the steps above but your Windows computer has broader problems such as persistent slowness, temporary-file buildup, or system-maintenance errors, you may separately research a third-party Windows PC cleanup tool. Outbyte PC Repair describes features for Windows repair, optimization, disk cleanup, privacy, and security, but it is not an official Netflix tool and Netflix does not recommend it as a Netflix fix. Do not use it instead of updating the browser, clearing Netflix site data, checking the network, or contacting the appropriate support provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Netflix keep loading while other websites work?

Netflix may have stale cookies or cached site data, a browser-extension conflict, an unsupported browser, or a DNS/VPN/proxy problem affecting Netflix specifically. Try a private window, use netflix.com/clearcookies, update the browser, and test Fast.com on the same network.

Will clearing Netflix cookies delete my account?

No. It does not delete the Netflix account, but Netflix says its clear-cookies action signs you out. You will need to sign in again.

Why does Netflix work on my phone but not my computer?

The computer may have an outdated browser, incompatible extension, stale Netflix data, a local VPN or proxy, or a device-specific DNS or security setting. Compare a private browser window and another supported browser before changing the router.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I change my DNS to fix Netflix?

Not as an early step. First restart the network and review VPN, proxy, filtering, and custom settings. If DNS remains suspect, record the original configuration and ask your ISP or device manufacturer to check it rather than making an unexplained permanent change.

The Bottom Line

In most cases, the fastest safe path is: check Netflix’s status page, restart the browser, test a private window, clear Netflix site data, update or switch browsers, restart the modem and router, then compare Fast.com and another network. Use a wired connection only as a diagnostic. If the failure affects multiple devices, call the ISP; if it follows one device, involve the manufacturer; if it persists across supported browsers and networks, contact Netflix with the exact error details.
