Atypical is included separately as a neurodiversity story about autism, not as a depiction of mental illness. These are representative examples, not a complete catalog or a ranking of clinical accuracy.
Which Netflix shows depict mental health issues?
The descriptions and editorial materials below identify distinct themes, but a story summary is not a clinical diagnosis. The cited sources do not establish that any of these series is clinically accurate, and they do not support assigning characters additional diagnoses.
| Series | Source-supported themes | Format or distinction |
|---|---|---|
| 13 Reasons Why | Depression, bullying, sexual assault and suicide-related content | Teen drama with companion discussion materials; audience-effects findings require careful qualification. |
| The Queen’s Gambit | Addiction to tranquilizers | Limited series based on Walter Tevis’s novel. |
| Maid | Abuse-related distress, family strain and a therapy group | Drama centered on a mother seeking safety and stability. |
| BoJack Horseman | Depression, addiction, trauma and self-destruction | Adult animated dark comedy. |
| Atypical | Autism, independence and relationships | Adjacent neurodiversity topic, not a mental-illness example. |
What each series focuses on
13 Reasons Why: suicide-related themes and difficult conversations
Netflix’s companion documentary, 13 Reasons Why: Beyond the Reasons, features cast members, writers, producers and mental-health professionals discussing themes including bullying, depression and sexual assault. Netflix also described discussion videos addressing depression, consent, substance abuse, bullying and recognizing potential harm, along with a downloadable discussion guide and enhanced advisories in its 2018 update. Those announcements are historical; availability of the materials may have changed.
The series has also been the subject of concern and research about how suicide is portrayed in popular entertainment. The National Institute of Mental Health’s 2019 summary of an NIH-supported study reported that suicide rates among U.S. youth ages 10–17 rose 28.9% in April 2017, the month after the show’s release, after accounting for ongoing trends. This was an observed association, not proof that the series caused the increase. NIMH said the findings highlight the importance of best practices in portraying suicide.

Netflix reported a different result from a study it commissioned with Northwestern University’s Center on Media and Human Development: 71% of teen and young adult viewers found the show relatable, and nearly three-quarters said it made them more comfortable processing difficult topics. These are findings as reported by Netflix, not an independent consensus, and they do not resolve the concerns raised by the separate NIMH summary. Netflix’s account is available in its 2018 discussion of the study.
The Queen’s Gambit: addiction within a coming-of-age story
Netflix’s Media Center description says Beth Harmon develops an addiction to tranquilizers provided at the orphanage where she grows up. The limited series is based on Walter Tevis’s novel. The official description establishes addiction as a story theme; it does not evaluate the portrayal’s clinical accuracy.

Maid: distress amid abuse and instability
In Netflix’s series description, Alex escapes an abusive relationship while trying to provide for her child. Episode descriptions refer to her mother Paula’s “fragile mental state,” a health crisis, and Alex finding strength and support in a creative-writing therapy group. The show’s mental-health context is bound up with abuse, housing insecurity and family pressures; those details do not establish a specific diagnosis for either character.
BoJack Horseman: depression, addiction and trauma in dark comedy
Netflix Tudum describes BoJack Horseman as exploring depression, addiction, trauma and self-destruction through absurd humor. Netflix’s series listing identifies it as a six-season adult animated comedy. Its animation and comedy do not make the themes less serious, but the format is a meaningful distinction for viewers choosing what to watch.

Atypical: autism and independence, not mental illness
Netflix’s Media Center description follows Sam, a 19-year-old on the autism spectrum seeking love and independence. Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition, not a mental illness. The series can be relevant to a broader discussion of neurodiversity and representation, but it should not be grouped as a mental-illness example.

The official descriptions identify themes, not a shared measure of clinical accuracy. They therefore support choosing by subject matter and format, but not ranking the series as more or less accurate representations of mental health. If suicide, abuse or other difficult material could be upsetting, check the title’s current maturity advisories and local catalog details before watching; Netflix availability and advisories can differ by territory and change over time.

Netflix’s 2020 description of Wanna Talk About It? said the site addressed mental health, abuse, self-harm and suicide and had been developed with 150 organizations from 45 countries. This is a dated company description, not confirmation that a particular resource is currently available or suitable in every location. A fictional storyline is not a substitute for care; viewers seeking help should use current support services appropriate to their location.
For broader context on criticism of using popular entertainment to address mental health, a 2023 PubMed-indexed abstract summarizes concerns around 13 Reasons Why, including suicide contagion, glamorization and depictions of adults in young people’s lives. It provides context for the debate, not a settled causal conclusion.
