Netflix did not announce that a games studio had already opened. On 26 September 2022, it said it was establishing an internal studio in Helsinki, Finland, and planned to build it from scratch. The company named Marko Lastikka as studio director, but did not give an opening date or say the studio had begun operating.
What Netflix announced in September 2022
Netflix’s announcement described a planned addition to its game-development operation, not a completed launch. Amir Rahimi, then Netflix vice president of Netflix Game Studios, wrote: “Today, I’m excited to announce that we are establishing an internal games studio in Helsinki, Finland, with Marko Lastikka as the studio director.” Netflix’s announcement also said it would build the studio from scratch.

The plan made Helsinki Netflix’s second games studio in the city, alongside Next Games, which had become part of Netflix earlier that year. Netflix said the studio would be built from the ground up; it did not publish a staffing target, investment figure, first-game announcement, or timetable for a release.
How the Helsinki studio fit Netflix’s games strategy
Netflix presented the new studio as one part of a broader effort to develop original games for members. Its stated model was to offer games without ads or in-app purchases. The company grouped the Helsinki studio with Next Games, Night School Studio, and Boss Fight Entertainment, saying the four studios had different strengths and areas of focus. Netflix also cautioned that developing a game can take years, so the 2022 announcement was not evidence that a title was imminent.

The portfolio combined studios Netflix had brought into the company with the Helsinki project it said it would create from scratch. Netflix announced in September 2021 that Night School Studio was joining the company, with games included in membership and no ads or in-app purchases. In a tender-offer document about Next Games, Netflix described that acquisition as adding a core studio in a strategic region and talent market while expanding its development capabilities. Those announcements show different ways Netflix was building its game operation; they do not establish that the studios had identical roles or output.
What later Netflix game announcements do—and do not—show
Netflix’s games offering later included more than the original announcement’s general plan for member games. In 2025, the company promoted titles based on entertainment franchises, including Squid Game: Unleashed and mobile WWE 2K games. Netflix said Squid Game: Unleashed was “on pace to be Netflix’s most downloaded game ever,” but supplied no download count. That was Netflix’s claim at the time, not a verified comparative figure or a statement of its current ranking.

In December 2025, Netflix also announced games for TVs that use a phone as the controller, including party titles such as Boggle Party, LEGO Party, Pictionary: Game Night, and Tetris Time Warp. These developments illustrate the expansion of Netflix’s formats and game types. Neither announcement identifies the Helsinki studio as the creator of any of those games. Netflix’s careers page describes its offering in terms that include narrative, strategic, party, and couch co-op experiences, but that company positioning does not establish which studio made a particular title.

Current-status claims require care. On 13 August 2026, PC Gamer reported that Netflix confirmed Night School’s closure and planned to close Moonloot, a Helsinki studio that the outlet described as founded by Netflix in 2022. The report does not establish that Moonloot was the internal studio Netflix announced in September 2022. Without an authoritative link between the two, the reported Moonloot closure cannot be treated as confirmation that the original studio opened, closed, or changed names. The available official information does not confirm the original Helsinki studio’s present operating status.
