Neeraj Vora made an impression at two very different scales: as an actor whose short appearances could stick with viewers, and as a screenwriter and director whose work helped shape entire films. His career ranged across acting, writing, direction and music, so remembering him only as the writer of Hera Pheri leaves out much of what he did.
Who was Neeraj Vora?
Neeraj Vora was an Indian actor, screenwriter, director and musician, born in Bhuj, Gujarat, on 22 January 1963. He died on 14 December 2017, aged 54, according to Scroll’s 2017 tribute.
He grew up in a family closely connected to music. His father, Vinayak Rai Vora, was a classical musician and inventor of the taar-shehnai; his brother Uttank Vora is a music composer. Artists and musicians associated with Gujarati theatre visited the family home, and Vora developed an interest in acting. He pursued theatre and won intercollegiate play awards before receiving his first film role in Ketan Mehta’s Holi in 1985, Scroll reports.
Why are his brief acting roles remembered?
Vora could make a small part count. The Indian Express obituary points to Sukhiya, the devoted man-Friday to Anil Kapoor’s character in Virasat, and a CBI scientist in Baadshah as examples of his memorable character work. These are selected performances, not a definitive list of his roles.

The appeal of such appearances is not that they were the whole of his career, but that he could give a scene a distinct comic or emotional beat without needing to dominate the film. That economy sits alongside a much larger contribution as a writer and director.
What did Neeraj Vora do on Hera Pheri and other films?
Credits matter: Vora’s connection to a film could be as actor, screenwriter or director, and one role should not be mistaken for another. The Indian Express identifies his screenplay contribution to Hera Pheri (2000). Scroll lists him as director of Khiladi 420 (2000), Phir Hera Pheri (2006), Shortkut – The Con Is On (2009) and Familywala (2014).
Rank #2
These titles are useful landmarks in his film career, not a complete filmography. His work behind the page and camera helps explain why a profile of Vora should extend beyond the familiar shorthand of “the Hera Pheri writer.”

In an interview with MovieTalkies, as quoted by the Indian Express, Vora said: “When the writer is also the director, the execution becomes easier.” The line captures one reason his work across roles is notable, but the available quotation does not establish the interview’s date or wider context.
