NDI Cloud Streaming: How to Send Video Across the Internet with NDI Bridge

NDI Bridge can connect NDI production networks over a WAN, but success depends on reachable endpoints, suitable bandwidth, matching security settings, and careful buffer and codec choices.

To carry NDI video between production sites over the internet, use NDI Bridge: configure one endpoint as Host and the other as Join, make the host reachable through a forwarded network port, and match the endpoints’ security and encoding settings. Bridge connects NDI networks across a wide-area network (WAN); it does not remove the need to plan for bandwidth, latency, packet loss, and router access.

What NDI cloud streaming means

NDI is used to move video between devices on a network. When the devices are in separate locations, the network path crosses a WAN rather than staying on one local area network (LAN). NDI Bridge is the documented NDI tool for connecting those production networks remotely. NDI describes it as a way to “Connect remotely over WAN.”

Bridge makes sources available across connected production networks; it does not host a video for public viewing or make an unpredictable internet connection deterministic. If your goal is to transport live production video between sites, Bridge is relevant. If your goal is to keep an uploaded video playing as a continuous YouTube live stream, that is a different workflow.

Choose the Bridge workflow for your sites

Host and Join for a WAN connection

Bridge’s Host and Join modes connect networks over a WAN. Before setup, decide which site will host, which site will join, whether video needs to travel one way or in both directions, and how many sources and receivers will be involved. Those choices affect the network capacity and encoding settings you need to plan for.

Local mode for a local network

Bridge also has a Local mode for local proxying and transcoding use cases. It is not the Host/Join connection between separate sites. Use the Bridge documentation to confirm which mode and options apply to your NDI source types and software versions.

Plan the network before connecting sites

Distinguish LAN capacity from internet capacity

NDI says gigabit networking is essential to production workflows. Its bandwidth guidance states that a typical 1080p60 NDI stream can reach up to 150 Mbps per stream. That figure is NDI / Vizrt AB’s guidance for a typical stream, not a guaranteed rate, universal upload-speed requirement, or cloud-service bitrate. NDI notes that bandwidth is not deterministic and should be planned around average utilization.

Estimate the combined traffic for the sources you intend to send, then consider the sustained upload capacity at the sending site and download capacity at the receiving site. Account for simultaneous sources, receivers, other network use, and headroom for variation. A gigabit switch and suitable cabling may help build a wired local production network, but they cannot increase your ISP service rate or guarantee WAN stability.

Check public reachability and port forwarding

The Bridge host must be reachable from the public internet. NDI says Bridge can find the public IP address, but it cannot configure your router’s forwarding rule. At least one location needs a public IP address, and a network port must be translated to the local IP address of the Bridge machine.

The documented default port is 5990, but another port can be selected. Configure your router to forward the chosen port to the host computer, and ensure the local firewall allows the traffic. If you do not control the router or cannot expose a reachable endpoint, ask your network administrator or hosting provider about an appropriate configuration before attempting the connection.

Check the Bridge computer requirements

NDI’s Bridge product page lists Windows 10 64-bit or later, an Intel or AMD CPU with SSE4 or later, 6 GB RAM or better, and a 1 Gbps LAN as minimum requirements. Software requirements and downloads can change, so verify the current Bridge page for the version you plan to install.

Configure Bridge securely and select encoding

  1. Install Bridge at the participating sites. Use the current NDI download and documentation for your operating system and version. Set the sites’ roles to Host and Join according to your planned connection.
  2. Make the host reachable. Identify the host’s public-facing address, choose the Bridge port, and configure the router’s port-forwarding rule to the host computer’s local IP. The router setup is not performed automatically by Bridge.
  3. Set the same encryption key on all endpoints. NDI’s current product information says Bridge uses 256-bit encryption and every endpoint must use the same encryption key. Treat the key like a password: share it only with intended participants and do not publish it in a stream description or open chat.
  4. Choose transcoding based on the source type and path. For NDI HX sources, Bridge documentation describes H.264 or HEVC transcoding. For High Bandwidth NDI, available choices include SpeedHQ, passthrough, or no transcoding, depending on configuration. Compression can reduce WAN load, but the choice changes the transport characteristics; confirm that both systems support the selected codecs and that the resulting image quality suits the production.
  5. Check decoder support. The documentation notes that HEVC decoding on Windows 10 and later may require a separate Microsoft Store license. Verify decoder availability on the receiving machine before relying on HEVC.
  6. Connect and inspect the received sources. Use the appropriate Bridge controls and your production application’s NDI source selection to confirm that the intended streams arrive at the remote site. Exact controls can vary by Bridge version, so follow the documentation for the installed release.

Tune for the real WAN path

Use the buffer to trade delay for continuity

Bridge’s configurable buffer stores video data and can improve continuity when latency or bandwidth varies, but buffering increases latency. A larger buffer may make a variable path more tolerant while making interactive timing less responsive. Tune it against the actual production: a remote contribution where timing matters has different needs from a feed that can tolerate more delay.

Measure instead of assuming

Use Bridge diagnostics to inspect send and receive rates, round-trip time, packet loss, and buffer behavior. The described buffer test in NDI 6.1 Bridge documentation requires both endpoints to run that version. These diagnostics help identify whether the path is constrained or unstable; they do not establish a performance guarantee for other networks or versions.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Compare a higher-bandwidth or passthrough configuration with compressed transport using the actual sources and receivers. The useful choice depends on desired resolution and visual quality, sustained upload and download capacity at both sites, tolerance for delay, the number of simultaneous feeds, codec support, and whether you can configure router access securely.

Troubleshoot common connection problems

  • The Join endpoint cannot connect: confirm the host is running, the public endpoint is reachable, the selected port matches the router’s forwarding rule, and the rule targets the host’s current local IP. Check the host firewall and confirm that the network permits the traffic.
  • Connection works locally but not from the remote site: a local test does not prove public reachability. Recheck the public IP and forwarding configuration; Bridge does not configure the router for you. If the site lacks a public address or suitable router access, contact its network administrator or provider.
  • Video stutters or drops: inspect packet loss, rates, and buffer behavior at both endpoints. Reduce WAN load by sending fewer sources or choosing a supported compressed configuration, then test again. Increasing the buffer may help with variable latency or bandwidth, at the cost of additional delay.
  • Video quality or decoding is wrong: verify whether the input is NDI HX or High Bandwidth NDI, check the selected transcoding mode and codec support at both ends, and confirm receiver decoding support. If using HEVC on Windows 10 or later, check whether the required decoder license is available.
  • Endpoints fail to establish a secured connection: confirm that each endpoint is using the same encryption key, then share any replacement key only through a controlled channel.

Do not rely on NDI Remote as a current workaround

NDI Remote is discontinued and offline. NDI’s tools catalog and dedicated documentation report that the service was taken offline after performance issues; it should not be treated as a working link-based guest workflow. For a current remote NDI connection, consult Bridge’s current documentation instead.
