NCIS: Sydney has not officially confirmed a new character with a direct connection to Leroy Jethro Gibbs. The likely source of the headline is a 2025 comment from executive producer Morgan O’Neill comparing how the show might reveal team leader Michelle Mackey’s family backstory with the original NCIS’s gradual reveal about Gibbs’ daughter, Kelly. That was a storytelling comparison—not confirmation that Mackey’s son is related to Gibbs.
What the Gibbs reference actually means
In a February 23, 2025 interview with TV Insider, executive producer Morgan O’Neill said viewers would eventually see Mackey’s son. He compared the delayed reveal of that family detail with the way the original NCIS gradually disclosed the significance of Gibbs’ daughter, Kelly.

O’Neill described the original show’s boat detail this way: “In the very first episode of the very first show, we find Gibbs in the basement working on a wooden boat, and you see the name tag on the wooden boat, and it’s not until several seasons later that you realize the name tag is the name of his dead daughter.”
The comparison is about storytelling: a small detail can acquire meaning as a character’s history unfolds. It does not establish that Mackey’s son is Gibbs’ relative, that Gibbs appears in NCIS: Sydney, or that the show has announced a new Gibbs-linked character.

What Paramount+ has confirmed for Season 4
Paramount+’s Season 4 guide, published July 29, 2026, says the series will return during the 2026–2027 TV season. The premiere is listed for midseason, but an exact date is still TBA. The guide describes the team’s upcoming cases as including gold heists, illicit trades, high-seas adventures and other crimes.
The guide lists Olivia Swann, Todd Lasance, Sean Sagar, Tuuli Narkle, Mavournee Hazel and William McInnes among the returning cast. It also identifies Travis “Trigger” Riggs, played by Claude Jabbour, as a recurring character who joined during Season 3. It does not identify a newly confirmed Gibbs connection.

The official CBS Studios series page describes the premise: U.S. NCIS personnel work with the Australian Federal Police on cases in Sydney. Its cast and episode information likewise does not confirm a Gibbs family link.

Production news is not character confirmation
Paramount Australia & New Zealand reported on May 11, 2026, that cameras were rolling on Season 4. In that announcement, Endemol Shine Australia’s Director of Scripted Content, Sara Richardson, said: “We are incredibly excited that we get to keep making this show in our own backyard, sharing Australian craft and talent with audiences around the world.” The announcement provides production context, not evidence of a newly announced Gibbs-linked character.
Paramount’s season information also refers to NCIS titles being licensed in over 200 markets. That is a franchise-level distribution figure, not an audience count for NCIS: Sydney.
