“Blue Becomes a Superstar” is not the episode’s official title, and Blue does not literally become a pop star. The installment is “Breathless,” a music-business murder case that also gives NCIS: Sydney’s Bluebird “Blue” Gleeson a substantial character-focused story. Its strongest appeal is the contrast between the case’s pop-world setting and the more personal questions raised by Blue’s connection to Nova and her relationship with Doc Roy.
What “Breathless” is about
CBS identifies “Breathless” as Season 2, Episode 7. Its official synopsis is concise: “The death of a US Navy chorister draws NCIS: Sydney into the world of the music business.” Apple TV’s Australian listing adds the atmosphere of obsessive fans, pop stars and earworms. That gives the case a setting with built-in pressure: the team is investigating a death in an industry where public image, intense fandom and access to performers can all matter.
The music-business backdrop is a useful change of texture for a procedural, but the available episode information does not establish that the story is a broad exposé of the industry or that Blue enters it as a performer. “Superstar” works as a playful headline for the episode’s attention to Blue, not as a plot summary.
Blue’s story is the episode’s emotional center
Lissete Lanuza Sáenz, reviewing the episode for Fangirlish on April 5, 2025, described it as “a very emotional Blue-centric hour” and praised the opportunity it gives Mavournee Hazel to show her range. That is one critic’s response, not a consensus or an official claim, but it points to the episode’s clearest character-level draw: Blue receives more than a few incidental moments around the investigation.

The Blue-and-Nova material gives the hour a personal thread, while Doc Roy’s recognition of Blue’s connection to Nova helps make that thread legible within the team. The effect, as Sáenz argues, is to make Blue more compelling without resolving every part of her history. That restraint can be a strength: a character story feels consequential when colleagues notice its weight, even if the episode does not explain everything at once.
Does the case balance the character work?
“Breathless” has two jobs: deliver a murder investigation rooted in the music business and make room for Blue’s emotional development. The premise supplies a distinctive setting, while the episode’s Blue focus gives the case a personal counterweight. For viewers primarily interested in the procedural, the central question is whether the investigation remains active enough to support that character work rather than becoming a backdrop. For viewers invested in the ensemble, the episode’s attention to team support is part of its appeal.

Sáenz also highlights the team’s relationships and the support Blue receives. That makes the hour sound less like a solo character detour than an ensemble story filtered through Blue’s experience. The available evidence supports calling it a Blue-focused episode with team dynamics in the mix; it does not support claims about audience consensus, ratings, or a definitive ranking within the season.
