The episode’s mystery may feel foreseeable, as CBR critic Brittany Frederick’s review put it, but its CIA partnership and aging-spy premise give the investigation a crafty shape for viewers who enjoy a case-driven hour.
Episode details
“In From the Cold” is Season 22, Episode 5 of NCIS, released November 11, 2024. Tawnia McKiernan directed the episode, written by Matthew Lau. CBS lists it as TV-PG (V|D|L). Rotten Tomatoes’ published synopsis says NCIS works with the CIA to uncover what secrets Capt. Butler, an aging former spy, is keeping.
That setup promises a spy story folded into the series’ procedural format: an investigation with institutional cooperation and a central figure whose past may complicate the present. The published synopsis does not identify the episode’s villain or describe the resolution, so this review stays with the premise and the critical response rather than inventing plot specifics.
Does the mystery work if the villain is predictable?
Frederick’s CBR review, published November 13, 2024, rated the episode 7/10 and called it “A crafty episode despite its predictable villain.” That is a critic’s assessment, not a plot fact established by the episode listing. The distinction matters: a mystery can be satisfying because of how the investigation unfolds, even when a viewer anticipates who is behind it.
#1 Best Overall
- SEASON 23: Includes all episodes from the twenty-third season of NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service.
- ACTION & DRAMA: Follow the elite team as they investigate high-stakes naval crimes and uncover complex mysteries.
- BELOVED CAST: Features the talented ensemble cast that has made NCIS one of television's longest-running dramas.
- PHYSICAL FORMAT: Comes as a physical disc set, perfect for collectors and fans of the long-running series.
- GREAT FOR FANS: An ideal addition to any NCIS collection, letting you relive every thrilling moment anytime.
The episode’s unusual ingredient is its aging former-spy premise and the CIA collaboration. Those elements give the case a different frame from a routine investigation, while the secrets at the center of the synopsis supply a reason to keep asking what Capt. Butler knows. For viewers who prize surprise above all, a predictable antagonist can weaken the payoff. For those more interested in the investigative route and spy-story atmosphere, the premise offers another source of interest.
Case first, character moments second
A Fangirlish review by Lissete Lanuza Sáenz, published February 18, 2025, described the episode as “pure escapism,” noting that it is mostly about the case, with a glimpse or two of character moments, particularly from Torres. That framing points to the episode’s likely appeal: it prioritizes the procedural engine rather than making a major character development the central event.
Rank #2
- NCIS NAVAL CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIVE SERVICE: Dive into the thrilling world of one of television's most popular crime dramas.
- ACTION-PACKED STORYLINES: Follows a team of special agents solving crimes connected to the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.
- BELOVED CHARACTERS: Features an iconic ensemble cast delivering compelling performances across every episode.
- GRIPPING MYSTERIES: Each episode presents intense investigations filled with suspense, twists, and dramatic reveals.
- PERFECT FOR FANS: A must-have for followers of crime procedural dramas and military-themed television series.
That balance will suit viewers arriving for a self-contained investigation, but may leave those looking for substantial character work wanting more. Torres’ moments provide a smaller personal thread within the case-led hour rather than, in this account, displacing the mystery as its focus.
Does the resolution’s feel-good tone land?
Lisa Babick’s TV Fanatic review, also dated November 13, 2024, gave the episode 3/5 and wrote: “While I love a feel-good win, sometimes they push fantasy a bit too far — especially with this one.” Her objection is about the plausibility of the outcome’s upbeat quality, a different reservation from Frederick’s concern about predictability.

- NCIS: Seasons 5-8 - DVD Brand New
Together, the reviews suggest the episode’s trade-off: it aims for an enjoyable case and a satisfying finish, but some viewers may find the villain too easy to anticipate or the win too neat. Whether that works depends on what a viewer wants from an NCIS episode. A breezy procedural payoff can be a pleasure in its own right; viewers who want a more credible or surprising resolution may be less persuaded.
Verdict
“In From the Cold” sounds best suited to viewers who value a distinctive case premise and an accessible procedural more than a difficult-to-guess villain or extensive character development. The critical response is mixed but gives a clear sense of the divide: Frederick found craft despite predictability, while Babick questioned how far the feel-good ending stretches plausibility. Its appeal rests on the ride through the case, not on the promise of an unpredictable reveal.
