The diplomatic case also brings Lena to Washington. In Meredith Jacobs’s October 21, 2024 spoiler recap for TV Insider, Lena’s presence and a case-related reason she has kept to herself complicate her casual relationship with Vance. Their personal story gradually becomes the episode’s main emotional thread.
How does Vance and Lena’s story end? (Spoilers)
TV Insider’s recap describes Vance initially brushing off Lena’s invitation amid the investigation and misunderstandings. Later, over dinner, he tells her he no longer wants a casual relationship and wants to spend more time together. Lena welcomes the change, saying she hoped he would ask and has already made him a key. The shift gives Vance a concrete personal choice rather than leaving the relationship at the level of unresolved tension.

#1 Best Overall
The episode also uses the team’s difficult experience the previous year to prompt Vance and Parker to talk about mortality and what they want. That context helps explain why Vance is ready to be more present, without turning the diplomatic murder case into a story solely about his romance.
Does the body-handling comedy work?
The investigation supplies the physical-comedy counterweight to Vance’s serious conversation. TV Fanatic critic Lisa Babick praised the team’s frantic attempt to manage a dead body without drawing attention, calling that chaos exactly the sort of thing the team does well. Her review, published October 22, 2024, gave the episode 4/5; Rotten Tomatoes reproduces the review and its assessment on its episode page.
Rank #2
That same complication is where another critic found a weakness. Brittany Frederick of CBR rated the episode 6/10 and argued that it was overstuffed with complications. The difference is useful: the body-management business can play as lively ensemble comedy, but it also adds another layer to an hour already balancing a diplomatic murder, Vance and Lena, and conversations about the future.
What about Knight and Palmer?
“Foreign Bodies” does not settle Knight and Palmer’s relationship. As recounted by TV Insider, Knight says they have not really talked about it; she describes them as friends who are doing well. Their status remains open rather than resolved in this episode, leaving Vance and Lena with the clearer relationship development.

What did critics think overall?
The published reactions are mixed rather than a reliable consensus: Rotten Tomatoes listed three critic reviews when checked in 2026. Alongside Babick’s praise for the comic body-handling chaos and Frederick’s objection to the number of complications, Fangirlish’s Lissete Lanuza Sáenz praised the humor and the poignancy of giving Vance a stronger spotlight. These are three individual responses, not a broad measure of audience opinion.
The episode’s strongest supported point is its focus: Vance’s personal story supplies the emotional payoff, while the body-management comedy gives the team a distinctly physical problem to work through. Whether that balance feels nimble or crowded depends on how much the viewer enjoys the extra complications around the diplomatic case. CBS labels the episode “Foreign Bodies,” Season 22, Episode 2, and lists Paramount+ as required for U.S. streaming; Rotten Tomatoes also lists Paramount+ and Fandango viewing or purchase options. Those page listings can change and vary by location.
