Spoilers for “Irreconcilable Differences.” NCIS gives McGee the episode’s defining case: investigate Deputy Director LaRoche even as his own credibility and career are at stake. The pursuit ends with McGee seeing LaRoche shoot someone, getting sideswiped by a truck, and watching him escape. That is tense television, but it leaves the central accusation hanging. The episode makes a strong McGee story; its cliffhanger also risks making delayed payoff feel like the point.

What does McGee discover about LaRoche?
TV Insider’s recap says McGee follows LaRoche to an abandoned power plant. There, McGee sees LaRoche shoot someone and calls out to stop him. LaRoche runs; a truck sideswipes McGee during the pursuit, allowing LaRoche to get away. TV Insider’s recap details the sequence.
The scene sharply raises the stakes, but it does not establish the full truth of LaRoche’s conduct or bring the investigation to a conclusion. TVLine likewise describes the LaRoche thread as unresolved at the end of the episode. TVLine’s ending coverage.

Does the cliffhanger work?
Why the suspense is effective
McGee is not a bystander to the danger: he puts his professional standing at risk, pursues the evidence, and faces LaRoche directly. The shooting and escape turn an institutional corruption investigation into immediate physical peril. The episode ends with a compelling question—what happened at the power plant, and what can McGee prove?—rather than a routine case-of-the-week wrap-up.
Fangirlish regarded the episode as one of the season’s strongest, praising its focus on McGee, the team’s support, and callbacks to Gibbs. That is one outlet’s positive assessment, not evidence of a wider critical consensus. Fangirlish’s review.

Why the ending may frustrate
The same cliffhanger that creates momentum also postpones the answer to the episode’s central question. McGee risks his credibility and career, witnesses what appears to be a grave act, and pursues the deputy director—yet LaRoche escapes before the episode can deliver accountability or a clearer explanation. If the show’s problem is a tendency to substitute suspense for payoff, this ending makes that concern sharper.
That criticism is strongest when kept specific. The available episode coverage establishes an unresolved LaRoche story here; it does not, by itself, prove that delayed resolution is a recurring series-wide flaw. On this episode’s own terms, the cliffhanger is both an effective escalation and an incomplete payoff.

What does the next episode promise?
CBS lists “Nexus” as Season 22, Episode 20. Its synopsis turns to a dangerous connection between the Nexus cartel and Parker’s longtime nemesis, mob boss Carla Marino, as well as a plot involving stolen nuclear material. That description does not say whether the LaRoche investigation continues or is resolved, so it is not evidence that the next episode settles McGee’s cliffhanger. CBS’s Season 22 episode guide.

“Irreconcilable Differences” gives McGee a consequential investigation and a forceful final pursuit. Its weakness is not that it leaves a question open; serialized drama can use uncertainty well. It is that the episode spends so much of its dramatic weight on McGee’s risk and apparent discovery, then withholds a meaningful answer. The result is engaging in the moment, but it also makes the case for frustration with cliffhangers that delay rather than deepen resolution.
