That imbalance makes the episode feel like filler, though Melina Kanakaredes gives it a guest character worth meeting. Whether it wastes a CSI: NY star depends on how much you wanted her to do beyond one hour as baker Eleni Kostakis.

The episode recap adds the more sensational details: Eleni Kostakis, the bakery owner played by Melina Kanakaredes, is kidnapped and forced to make cocaine-laced baked goods. Torres and Knight find her; Eleni helps them stay alive and work out an escape, which sets off an explosion before Parker and McGee arrive for the takedown. Director Rocky Carroll called the sequence “part disaster film, part NCIS,” in a TV Insider interview.
Does the case make the episode feel like filler?
Mostly, yes. The blackmail premise gives the team a clear assignment, but the forced pastries and explosive getaway push the case toward cartoonish spectacle rather than a mystery with much weight. The hour’s energy comes from the danger and the oddity of its setup, not from a particularly intricate investigation.

#1 Best Overall
That is not automatically a flaw for a procedural. A wildly specific case can be entertaining if it creates memorable character moments, and the bakery gives Parker a personal point of connection. Still, the case resolves more as an elaborate action set piece than as a story that changes the season’s direction. “Filler” is a fair description of its limited larger stakes, not a claim that the episode has nothing enjoyable in it.
Does Melina Kanakaredes get enough to do?
Kanakaredes plays Eleni as more than a victim waiting for rescue: she helps Torres and Knight survive and escape. That agency makes her useful to the story, and her connection to Parker’s favorite bakery gives the guest appearance a character angle beyond the crime itself. TV Insider’s casting report identified her as the bakery owner and quoted executive producer Steven D. Binder calling her “a ton of fun.” Binder also said the producers would like to bring her back, while noting that only this one episode was planned at the time.
Rank #2
But the installment does not build Eleni into a co-lead or give her a long arc. Her role is memorable in the escape sequence and establishes a possible connection with Parker, yet the episode leaves that possibility for another story. That makes “wastes” too strong if it means Kanakaredes has no meaningful part; it fits better as a complaint that the show uses a recognizable guest star briefly and does not develop the character further here.
What do the personal subplots add?
Parker and the bakery
The bakery offers a small window into Parker’s private tastes: his favorite sweets, and his mother’s love of baking. Those details soften the procedural and make his concern for Eleni feel personal, even if they do not transform the case. Fangirlish’s episode review also reads this material as adding to Parker’s characterization.

Torres and Robin
The episode reveals that Torres’ secret romance is with Robin, Jessica Knight’s sister. The reveal supplies a relationship thread with an immediate connection to the team, rather than introducing a love interest wholly outside its orbit. It is a more consequential character beat than the bakery case’s mechanics, although the episode’s reveal is not itself proof of where that relationship will go.
Is “Baker’s Man” worth watching?
For viewers following Parker and Torres, yes: the bakery connection gives Parker some personal texture, and Robin’s identity makes Torres’ secret romance relevant to Knight as well. For viewers primarily seeking a convincing crime puzzle or a substantial Kanakaredes showcase, expectations should be lower. The case is intentionally outlandish, and Eleni’s importance is concentrated in this episode.

Critical reactions are mixed rather than unanimous. Fangirlish called the episode “very atypical” but “mostly fun”; Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page lists a 3/5 TV Fanatic review and a CBR description of it as one of the season’s more underwhelming episodes. Those are a small set of reviews, not evidence of audience-wide consensus.

“Baker’s Man” follows “Humbug,” which aired December 16, 2024, and precedes “For Better or Worse,” dated February 3, 2025, according to CBS’s Season 22 episode schedule. That placement frames it as a standalone-leaning hour between other installments, but the surrounding schedule alone cannot establish whether it is narratively disposable.
