The original character in question is Tony DiNozzo, played by Michael Weatherly: CBS confirms he appeared in a Season 21 episode, and a later official announcement described a season-long return arc for Season 24 in 2026–2027.
What is the disappointing update about Tony DiNozzo?
There is no substantiated specific disappointing update in the source carrying that claim. GeekChamp’s January 6, 2026, article refers vaguely to a beloved original character and a limited return, but does not clearly identify the character in its headline or provide a verifiable source for the claimed future. Its assertions about a brief role should not be treated as confirmed news.

The character relevant to the Season 21 story is Tony DiNozzo, portrayed by Michael Weatherly. CBS’s official NCIS episode listing establishes his appearance and the story context, rather than a continuing role across Season 21.
What happened in Season 21?
In the Season 21 episode, DiNozzo helps the NCIS team as it handles the fallout from a shooting involving McGee’s son and a threat to the Secretary of the Navy. CBS’s episode description confirms that appearance. It does not establish that DiNozzo returned as a regular character or remained involved throughout the season.

What has been announced about his later return?
Paramount Press Express later announced that Weatherly would reprise DiNozzo in a season-long arc for the 2026–2027 season. CBS’s official NCIS series page describes his return in Season 24. This is a separate, later development—not evidence that he had a continuing part in Season 21.
The confirmed scope differs by season:
| Season | What is confirmed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Season 21 | DiNozzo helps the team in an episode; CBS’s description does not promise an ongoing role. | CBS episode listing |
| Season 24, 2026–2027 | Paramount announced a season-long arc; CBS identifies his Season 24 return. | Paramount Press Express and CBS |
Does the Season 24 announcement guarantee what comes next?
The official announcement establishes the announced arc for Season 24, not a commitment to keep DiNozzo in the series beyond that season. Commentary published by CinemaBlend on October 7, 2026, offers an interpretation of his longer-term presence, but that interpretation should be distinguished from the official scope of the announcement.
