The teaser for NCIS’s 1,000th franchise episode called back to two characters who had died: Caitlin “Kate” Todd and Tom Morrow. Entertainment coverage identified them in the teaser; CBS’s official episode materials confirm the milestone episode and its story, but do not name the pair as teaser subjects.
Which two characters did the teaser call back to?
Looper’s April 9, 2024 coverage identified Kate Todd and Tom Morrow in the teaser material. Both were former NCIS characters who had died, making their images callbacks rather than signs that either character had returned alive or joined the episode’s cast. TV Insider’s post-air coverage also described Easter eggs involving Todd and Morrow, linking them to the original series’ first investigation.

The identification comes from entertainment reporting, not an explanation published in CBS’s official episode announcement. The distinction matters: the official materials describe the episode’s premise, while the reporting identifies the teaser’s character references.

The official synopsis says NCIS faces “a mysterious enemy from the past” while Director Leon Vance tries to repair his relationship with his estranged son. The past-focused threat gives the episode a natural setting for callbacks, but the official synopsis does not say that Todd or Morrow return as living characters.
CBS also announced special appearances by Daniela Ruah, from NCIS: Los Angeles, and Vanessa Lachey, from NCIS: Hawai’i.
