Nautilus is a 10-part live-action adventure fantasy series that reimagines Captain Nemo’s origins, drawing on Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Disney+ had planned to release it, but dropped the completed series before it reached the service. AMC Networks later gave it a home on AMC and AMC+. Reports of renewed U.S. interest include a chart-topping AMC+ ranking and a reported linear-TV premiere audience—but those dated figures do not establish that the show remains a hit or has been renewed.
What is Nautilus about?
The series imagines how Captain Nemo came to command the submarine Nautilus. Shazad Latif plays Nemo, described in coverage of AMC’s acquisition as an Indian prince who loses his birthright and family, is imprisoned by the East India Company, and escapes by taking the submarine. He sets out with a crew on an adventure at sea.
Nautilus is inspired by Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, but its focus is an origin story for Nemo and his vessel rather than a straightforward retelling of the novel. James Dormer wrote and executive produced the series; Michael Matthews directed it. The reported supporting cast includes Georgia Flood and Thierry Frémont. Coverage of AMC’s acquisition and the series describes the premise and production team.
Why was it dropped by Disney+?
Nautilus was made as a Disney+ project, but Disney removed it from its release plans after filming was complete. AMC Networks subsequently acquired the 10-part series for AMC and AMC+, announcing it as a special television event. The original announcement pointed to a release the following year; later reporting describes its eventual premiere on AMC and AMC+ and also names Prime Video as a viewing route. The change of distributor did not turn the series into a Disney+ release.

What does “gaining popularity” mean in this case?
Entertainment coverage points to renewed U.S. attention, but the indicators are tied to particular dates and sources—not a current, ongoing ranking.
- Reported premiere audience: An indexed report citing Deadline says the premiere drew 2.6 million viewers on linear television, using Nielsen live+3 data from 2025. The report called it AMC’s strongest premiere-night audience since The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live. This is an attributed historical figure, not a current viewership total.
- AMC+ chart position: Another report, citing FlixPatrol’s AMC+ chart, says Nautilus ranked first on August 5 in the period it covered. That is a dated chart snapshot, not proof of its present position.
These reports support saying the series drew renewed attention after its release. They do not establish a renewal, sustained popularity, or how it is performing now. The audience and chart reporting provides the attributed context for these figures.

Where can you watch Nautilus?
AMC and AMC+ are the release platforms identified in coverage of the acquisition and later premiere reporting also names Prime Video. That does not confirm that the series is currently available in every country—or whether access on a particular service is included with a subscription, requires a separate payment, or includes all 10 episodes. Check the local service catalog and episode listings before subscribing or renting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the series based on Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea?
It is inspired by Verne’s novel, with a focus on Nemo’s backstory and the origins of the Nautilus. Readers curious about that literary connection can start with Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, the best-supported book tie-in. The series should be approached as a reimagining of the character’s beginnings, not assumed to be a scene-by-scene adaptation.
