National Canadian Film Day’s 2026 edition took place on April 15, with REEL CANADA reporting 2,190 screenings, 213 special guests and participation across 891 Canadian communities and 45 countries. The next edition is scheduled for April 14, 2027; details about its program and locations have not yet been announced on the organizer’s homepage.
What happened on National Canadian Film Day 2026?
Presented by REEL CANADA, National Canadian Film Day (CanFilmDay) is a coast-to-coast-to-coast celebration of Canadian cinema. The 2026 theme was “Let’s Dream Together.” The program included premieres, sneak previews, Canadian Screen Award nominees, guest appearances, live events and Q&As. REEL CANADA’s preview named 51 guest programmers, including Margaret Atwood, Sarah Polley, Rick Mercer and Danis Goulet.
The organizer’s final figures were 2,190 screenings, 213 special guests, and activity in 891 Canadian communities and 45 countries. REEL CANADA also reported that 2.5 million people enjoyed a Canadian film at home. That home-viewing figure is separate from in-person attendance: the event highlights page reported more than 100,000 audience members. REEL CANADA’s pages describe the 2,190 total variously as screenings and events, so the terms should not be treated as identical measures.
These are measures of reach and participation, not evidence by themselves of broader cultural or economic impact. A March 31, 2026 announcement had projected 2,000 free screenings and reported nearly 150 screenings in 49 countries at that point; those were previews, not the final results.

How to take part
Find a local screening
Use the CanFilmDay event finder to look for a screening near you. Compare the venue and distance, start time, film and format, whether a guest or Q&A is included, and the venue’s admission or reservation terms. Do not assume every event has the same ticket policy.
Rank #2
For example, the Canadian Film Institute listed a free April 15, 2026 screening of Bon Cop, Bad Cop at Ottawa’s ByTowne Cinema, followed by a prerecorded Q&A with Colm Feore. Admission was first come, first served for that event; it was a local arrangement, not a general CanFilmDay rule.
Watch at home or join online
Participation is not limited to attending a cinema. The organizer promotes watching a Canadian film at home and joining online activity. Its host information also points organizers to event tips, tools and downloadable party kits.

Individuals and organizations can host an event. REEL CANADA says it provides the film and offers guidance and downloadable resources to help hosts plan. Consult the host page for the current details, then confirm any venue-specific arrangements directly with the venue.
