Cleary posted a beach photo of the pair on January 16 with the caption “That’s life” and an ice cream emoji; Fowler followed with a couple photo in a six-image carousel. Later coverage also called a separate Fowler post in April a “hard launch,” so the label can refer to more than one moment.
What Cleary posted on January 16
Cleary’s beach photo showed him and Fowler together. He captioned it “That’s life” with an ice cream emoji, in a post that PerthNow reported on January 17, 2024. PerthNow’s report described it as a relationship “hard launch.”
Why the ice cream emoji mattered
The emoji nodded to earlier coverage of the pair being seen together over ice cream. PerthNow reported that Cleary’s spokesperson had described the encounter as “just ice cream”; the emoji was understood as a reference to that line, not a direct explanation from either athlete.
Fowler’s follow-up post
On January 19, PerthNow reported that Fowler had posted a photo of the couple as part of a six-image Instagram carousel. This followed Cleary’s January 16 post. The follow-up report also quoted Cleary discussing the attention paid to his personal life: “I haven’t had too many people look into my personal life. But it’s just what comes with it. It’s something that I can’t control.” Those remarks concerned public attention generally, not the Instagram post specifically.

Why some headlines say “hard launch” twice
January’s posts were described as the couple going public, but the phrase appeared again in coverage of a different Fowler carousel on April 15, 2024. Fox Sports, in a report carried by News.com.au, also called that later post a “hard launch.” The two moments are distinct:
| Moment | Date | Post and sequence | How coverage described it |
|---|---|---|---|
| January posts | January 16 and 19, 2024 | Cleary posted the beach photo first; Fowler followed with a couple photo in a six-image carousel. | January coverage used “hard launch” for Cleary’s post and described Fowler’s follow-up as going Instagram official. |
| Later Fowler carousel | April 15, 2024 | Fowler shared another carousel, covered separately from the January posts. | Fox Sports called this carousel a “hard launch” too. |
The April report does not establish that the later carousel drew more engagement than the January posts.

What later reporting adds—and what it does not
A retrospective published by The Australian Women’s Weekly on October 1, 2026, reported Cleary thanking his partner in a Dally M speech and discussing the difficulty of a long-distance relationship. That is later context about what he said at the time; it does not, by itself, establish their precise current relationship status. Read the retrospective.
