Their public story also includes a shared career in home-design television.
How Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent met
They were acquainted socially before they began dating. When they first met, Berkus had a serious boyfriend, and Brent later described the timing as wrong. Roughly three years later, they saw each other again at Rachel Zoe’s birthday party in New York, when both were single. Berkus invited Brent antique shopping that weekend.
Brent recalled that their date stretched late into the night as they talked about design and travel books. He called it “magic,” saying, “I had never felt so safe and so exactly where I was meant to be.” Berkus later described it simply: “It was the date that never ended.” HGTV’s interview-based account is the source for their recollections.
When they got engaged and married
Berkus and Brent became engaged in Peru in 2013. They married on Saturday, May 3, 2014, at the New York Public Library, as reported by CBS News. TIME reported that they were the first same-sex couple to marry at that venue—a claim specific to the library, not a broader milestone in the history of same-sex marriage.

Yes. They have two children, Poppy and Oskar. HGTV dates Poppy’s birth to May 2015 and says their son arrived three years later. Brent’s official biography identifies Berkus as his husband and names Poppy and Oskar as their children.
What they do together professionally
Their shared work includes The Nate & Jeremiah Home Project. In a September 2021 announcement, Warner Bros. Discovery described the HGTV series as helping families decide which sentimental belongings to keep, repurpose, or donate, then renovating their homes around those families’ stories. The project is a visible part of their partnership, though it does not establish details about their private life.
What they have said about being visible as a couple
In HGTV’s feature, Brent explained why the couple chose to be open about their family: “We’re two men in love, with two children, and that’s not something that everyone has exposure to yet.” He also said, “Nate and I feel a deep obligation to be seen,” and described their activism as “living out loud in the open, honestly, vulnerably and without hesitation.” These are Brent’s stated views on visibility, rather than evidence about private relationship dynamics.
