Uncanny Valley was announced in April 2025 as a science-fiction feature combining live action and AI. Natasha Lyonne was set to direct and star alongside co-writer Brit Marling. The story centers on a teenager whose augmented-reality game begins to unsettle her sense of what is real.

What is Uncanny Valley about?

The film’s announced premise follows Mila, a teenage girl living in a parallel present. When glitches begin appearing in a popular augmented-reality video game, they disrupt her grasp on reality. The game is a fictional element of the story; the announcement does not describe a real game or a documentary about augmented reality.

The science-fiction premise also reflects the creators’ stated interest in how technology shapes human experience. In a 2025 interview with Marie Claire, Lyonne described the project as a personal human story and discussed its intended conversation about AI. That is her account of the film’s aims, not an independent assessment of a completed movie.

Who is making the film?

In its April 29, 2025 announcement report, TheWrap said Lyonne would direct the feature, co-write it with Marling and star in it. Marling was also set to star. The project was described as Lyonne’s feature directorial debut. ANSA’s April 30, 2025 report likewise recapped the directing, writing and starring roles.

The announcement described the project as a collaboration involving computer scientist Jaron Lanier and Asteria Studios, which Lyonne co-founded with Bryn Mooser. TheWrap quoted Lyonne saying, “The scope of what’s possible with these new technologies when used ethically and creatively is astounding.” Marling said, “Science fiction can be a powerful tool of resistance — imagining what could be instead of what is.”

How is AI involved?

Uncanny Valley was presented as a hybrid production combining live-action filmmaking with AI. TheWrap reported that the project would be powered by Moonvalley’s Marey foundational model. Its account quoted Asteria describing Marey as intended to ensure “creative integrity and copyright transparency.” Those are the studio’s stated claims; the announcement does not independently establish the model’s training provenance or verify the claims.

The available announcement coverage does not specify how much of the film would be live action versus AI-assisted, or detail which production tasks would use the model. It therefore supports describing the film as a planned live-action-and-AI hybrid, but not making more precise claims about its workflow.

When will Uncanny Valley be released, and where can you watch it?

TheWrap reported on April 29, 2025 that no tentative release date had been set. The cited coverage does not name a distributor or viewing platform, so it does not establish where or when the film can be watched. Treat it as an announced project, not a film confirmed as currently available.

What the announcement establishes—and what it doesn’t

  • Established in the announcement: Lyonne was announced as director and co-writer, Marling as co-writer, and both as stars; the story follows Mila and her glitching AR game; the project was described as combining live action and AI.
  • Not established by that coverage: a release date, distributor, platform, detailed breakdown of AI use, or independent verification of Asteria’s claims about sourcing and copyright transparency.

The Hollywood Reporter’s April 29, 2025 report, republished by Yahoo Entertainment, also described the project’s immersive-video-game and AI framing. These reports document the announcement; they are not evidence that the film has since been completed or released.
