More than two decades later, the song found a new role in the romantic comedy Anyone But You: it is Ben’s “serenity song,” a private soundtrack for finding calm. Bedingfield has said the film brought the track to a new audience, while its original idea—young people having the freedom to write their own futures—remains at its heart.
How “Unwritten” began as a poem for Bedingfield’s brother
Bedingfield told The Guardian that “Unwritten started as a poem.” She had missed Joshua’s 14th birthday while working in Los Angeles, and the poem grew from thinking about him and the pressure young people can feel about what lies ahead. Its central idea was that the future is not already decided: young people can write their own stories.
Songwriter Danielle Brisebois, who co-wrote and co-produced the track, described the collaboration as an exchange: “Writing songs with Natasha was always like a tennis match – back and forth.” Bedingfield said she and Brisebois developed the idea together, with musician Wayne Rodrigues contributing the drum groove.
The musical ideas behind the song
Bedingfield told The Guardian that she had the Beatles’ Indian period in mind for the verse. The gospel-style section drew on a different influence: her childhood experience of an African-Caribbean church in London.

She originally hoped to record a real choir. Instead, her sister Nikola was visiting Los Angeles, and Bedingfield and her friend Jessi Collins layered the vocals. “I wanted a real choir for Unwritten but my sister Nikola was in LA visiting at that time, so with my friend Jessi Collins we just layered up the vocals,” she told The Guardian.
Why “Unwritten” is Ben’s serenity song in Anyone But You
In Anyone But You, Ben listens to “Unwritten” through headphones while asleep; the song is presented as his way of calming himself. Bedingfield told British GQ that the initial request was to use the track in that scene. The filmmakers later wanted to use it more extensively.

The song’s film role connects its bright, reassuring message to a character’s need for comfort. Bedingfield has also described songwriting itself as a source of calm: “Writing songs is my serenity,” she told GQ. The movie gives “Unwritten” a specific story function, while the song’s broader appeal comes from the way listeners can make its message their own.
What Bedingfield said about the song’s renewed attention
The film’s release coincided with renewed visibility for “Unwritten.” British GQ reported in February 2024 that daily views of the song’s music video had risen 250% around the film’s release. That is a dated report, not a current viewing figure, and the available reporting does not establish that the film alone caused every part of the song’s resurgence.

Official Charts documented “Unwritten” returning to the UK Top 20 around the film’s release. In an interview with the chart organisation, Bedingfield reflected on the way audiences had taken ownership of the track: “I really do feel like Unwritten is not just my song, it’s your song too. You made it your song.”
The Guardian reported in March 2024 that the track was approaching 700 million Spotify plays. That, too, is a dated estimate rather than a live count. Together, these reports capture the scale of the renewed attention at that moment without implying that the same figures describe the song’s performance today.

Why the song can feel personal to different listeners
“Unwritten” was rooted in a particular relationship: a sister thinking about her younger brother and the choices ahead of him. Its message widened from there. In Anyone But You, it becomes a character’s comfort song; for listeners, it can also serve as an invitation to imagine a future that is still open.
That shift from personal poem to shared song helps explain why Bedingfield describes it as belonging to its audience as well as to her. The film offers one new context for hearing it, but the song’s meaning is not limited to the movie.
