National Geographic’s seven-part series Africa: Earth’s Wild Home took more than 300 days of field filming across 33 countries, according to a 2026 PetaPixel interview with showrunner Gavin Boyland. The feature also reports more than 100 expeditions and six sequences it calls “world’s firsts”—a label that describes the production’s claims, not independently verified scientific priority.

How long did filming take, and how many countries did the crew visit?

PetaPixel’s October 1, 2026 feature reports that the production filmed in the field for over 300 days, across 33 countries, and carried out more than 100 expeditions. These are figures reported in the interview-based feature; it does not cite independently reviewed production records. The series is a seven-part National Geographic natural-history production.

The crew included cinematographers, audio engineers, directors, and other specialists. The feature describes a varied equipment mix: remote camera rigs, drones, macro setups, super-telephoto lenses, and military-grade night-vision cameras. Boyland’s stated aim was to match the tools to the behavior being filmed and help viewers feel present in animal habitats. PetaPixel’s interview with Gavin Boyland

What are the six reported “world’s firsts”?

PetaPixel attributes the following six footage achievements to the series. “World’s first” is the feature’s framing; the interview does not supply independent scientific verification of priority for each sequence.

  2. The black rain frog’s television debut. PetaPixel describes the appearance as the frog’s first on television.
  3. A Namibian desert beetle collecting fog moisture. The beetle reportedly digs trenches that gather moisture from coastal fog. The feature does not identify the beetle species or cite scientific literature confirming the behavior.
  4. Tortoises hunting birds. The feature calls them the world’s only meat-eating tortoises.
  5. Golden wolves hunting pelicans. The pelicans are described as three times the wolves’ size.
  6. Fossa fighting for mates. The series captured the animals’ mating-season conflict.

The feature also describes chimpanzees using sticks to fish algae from ponds. Boyland presents this as rarely observed, but not as a world first.

How did the crew film difficult animal behavior?

Rather than relying on one camera approach, the production selected equipment for the subjects and settings, according to Boyland’s interview. The examples illustrate how the crew adapted the setup to the scene:

Boyland summed up the unpredictability of wildlife filming this way: “Nature writes the script. You never know what’s going to happen.” He also said, “We always wanted to feel like we’re in an animal’s home, in their environment.”

What does the sea-turtle sequence show about intervention?

The interview describes local conservationists stepping in when a turtle is judged unlikely to reach the ocean. The crew filmed two different outcomes: one turtle made it to the water without help, while another was rescued after conservationists decided it was unlikely to survive. The account does not describe routine intervention in every crossing; the stated approach was to let turtles make the journey themselves wherever possible.
