His story begins with loss, moves through a period when he was known as “Cold-blooded Kakashi,” and eventually brings him back to the lesson he once struggled to learn: a shinobi’s bonds with comrades matter more than rules or individual talent.
He was a prodigy whose first great loss was his father
Kakashi is the son of Sakumo Hatake, a renowned shinobi. The NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE’s 2024 retrospective describes Kakashi as exceptionally talented from childhood: he graduated from the Ninja Academy and became a chunin at a young age.
Sakumo’s death by suicide was, in the retrospective’s account, the beginning of a series of painful farewells that left Kakashi deeply wounded. An official episode listing adds a childhood detail: after his father’s death, Kakashi lived alone, while Rin and Obito sought his attention because of his ability.
His losses help explain the shift from rule-bound shinobi to teammate-first teacher
As a young shinobi, Kakashi was committed to following rules and orders. His life then brought repeated losses: Obito was crushed while saving him; Rin, made the Three-Tails’ jinchuriki, died by Kakashi’s Lightning Blade; and Minato died protecting Konoha from the Nine-Tails. The official retrospective says these experiences affected Kakashi deeply and that he spent a period in the Black Ops.

The anime’s official ANBU-arc listing describes him as a highly regarded member under Minato’s command. His ruthless way of killing enemies earned him the nickname “Cold-blooded Kakashi.” That reputation makes the later teacher who insists on caring for comrades a striking contrast—not a contradiction, but a change shaped by grief and experience.
The bell test is a lesson about supporting teammates
When Kakashi tests Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura, the bells are not simply a measure of individual ninja skill. The retrospective explains that Kakashi had never passed a genin team before and that he was testing whether they could work together and care for one another. The lesson is clearest in his words, attributed to Naruto Volume 2, Chapter 8, “You Failed!”:

- This figure features Kakashi as seen during the Fourth Great Ninja War. For the first time, Kakashi is designed with a scar across his jacket
- For Ages 4+
The supplied wording is the version reproduced by the official retrospective; wording can vary by edition and localization. The point of the test is that obeying orders and being individually capable are not enough if a shinobi abandons a teammate.
Kamui is powerful, but using it takes a toll
Kakashi’s Sharingan and later Mangekyo Sharingan give him abilities that extend well beyond his reputation as a skilled copy ninja. In the fight against Deidara, he uses Kamui, a technique the retrospective describes as sending its target into an alternate dimension. The Mangekyo’s use comes at a significant physical cost; after using it, Kakashi is hospitalized.

His story later brings him face to face with Pain and reveals that the masked enemy is Obito. During the war, the two confront their shared past. The NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE’s second retrospective recounts that Obito’s final gift temporarily gives Kakashi a second Sharingan. In the battle against Kaguya, Kakashi manifests Perfect Susano’o and uses Kamui to protect his students. This is a story-specific, temporary power-up—not evidence that he permanently keeps Obito’s eyes or abilities.

After the war, Kakashi is appointed Sixth Hokage and leads Konoha until Naruto succeeds him. The appointment completes a different kind of arc from his rise as a prodigy: he becomes responsible for the village and its people after years in which he learned, painfully, what it means to lose comrades.

Two profile details make Kakashi’s character page unusually specific
The official retrospective lists Kakashi’s birthday as September 15 and his favorite foods as salt-grilled saury and miso soup with eggplant. These are profile details, rather than clues that alter the plot, but they add a little domestic texture to a character more often remembered for battles, masks, and missions.
His “1,000 jutsu” line is a boast, not a verified count
Kakashi declares, “I AM KAKASHI THE MIRROR NINJA! I’VE COPIED 1,000 JUTSU! WATCH ME LIVE UP TO MY NICKNAME!” The official retrospective attributes the line to Naruto Volume 55, Chapter 524, “That Which Ought to Be Protected.” It is character dialogue, not an independently established tally of techniques he demonstrably uses.
Official figure announcements do not establish current store availability
For readers interested in a physical collectible, the NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE announced a BANPRESTO Grandista Kakashi Hatake II figure in Black Ops attire, posed crouching, with release scheduled to start June 18, 2026 (JST). The announcement identifies the product and scheduled release date; it does not confirm a current Amazon listing, price, or stock.
Other official announcements describe a MegaHouse Lookup Kakashi figure in Black Ops gear at approximately 110 mm tall, and a G.E.M. palm-sized Kakashi figure shown without his usual vest. The Lookup height is the published figure specification; the announcements do not establish current retailer availability.
For manga readers, the official Volume 3 listing says the book contains chapters 18–27 and that Kakashi trains Team Seven ahead of Zabuza’s return. It is a useful early Team Seven reference, though the listing does not identify it as a Kakashi-focused edition.
