The Six Paths of Pain are six bodies controlled by Nagato through the Outer Path. Each body uses a different branch of the Rinnegan’s Six Paths abilities; the bodies are not six independent people. The face most often identified as Pain is Yahiko’s corpse, serving as the Deva Path.
Who are Pain and Nagato?
Nagato is the operator behind Pain. He remotely controls six bodies and coordinates them through chakra receivers. The Deva Path—the body most viewers recognize as Pain—is Yahiko’s corpse.
The official Naruto Shippuden episode 393 page, “Origin of Pain,” describes Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan seeking Jiraiya in a war zone to learn ninjutsu. After training, they form an organization led by Yahiko. That synopsis provides their story background; it does not explain the mechanics of Nagato’s technique.
What does each of the Six Paths do?
Each controlled body has a primary role associated with one path. These assignments describe the bodies’ main branches, not every technique Nagato may use.

|---|---|
| Deva | Manipulates attractive and repulsive forces. Yahiko’s corpse is the Deva body. |
| Asura | Uses a mechanized body and weaponry. |
| Human | Reads or extracts souls. |
| Animal | Summons creatures. |
| Preta | Absorbs chakra. |
| Naraka | Uses the King of Hell, including to restore other paths. |
How can six bodies fight as one?
The bodies share a linked field of vision. Nagato can see through multiple bodies’ perspectives and coordinate their actions, giving the group broader battlefield awareness and helping cover blind spots. Chakra receivers connect the bodies to Nagato.
Is this the same as Six Paths Sage Mode?
No. “Six Paths of Pain” names Nagato’s technique of controlling six bodies. It is related to the Rinnegan’s Six Paths abilities, but it does not mean the bodies are the Sage of Six Paths, and it is not another name for Naruto’s Six Paths Sage Mode. The shared phrase should not obscure that these are distinct terms.
