The Hyuga clan’s family divide shapes Neji’s story from childhood to his final act. Official Naruto recaps connect the main and branch families to his curse mark, his father Hizashi’s death, the techniques Neji mastered, and his understanding of choice. These ten details follow that thread rather than treating them as unrelated trivia.
How the Hyuga family is divided
1. The clan has a main family and a branch family
The distinction is explicit in the official anime synopsis for episode 46, “Byakugan Battle: Hinata Grows Bold!” It identifies Hinata as belonging to the main Hyuga family and Neji to the branch family, while describing them as blood relatives. Read the official episode synopsis.

2. Neji is Hizashi’s son and a branch-family member
The official Neji profile identifies Neji as the son of Hizashi, a member of the cadet branch. Neji’s position is therefore not simply a matter of personality or rivalry: it is part of the family structure into which he was born. The official Neji column points readers to the manga’s account of this history.
3. Hinata is both his relative and the main-branch heiress
Hinata is Neji’s blood relative and the main-branch heiress. That combination makes their match in the Chunin Exam more than a contest between two skilled young shinobi: the official recaps place it against the tension between their positions in the same clan.

What Neji’s curse mark meant
4. Neji received the mark when Hinata turned three
The official Neji column says the main branch placed the curse mark on him when Hinata turned three. It remained on Neji until his death. For the manga chapters behind the family backstory, the column points to Naruto Volume 12, Chapter 102, “The Caged Bird…!!”
5. The mark was tied to an obligation to protect the main branch
The column describes Neji’s life as dedicated to protecting the main branch’s bloodline. The mark and that duty help explain why he initially sees his branch status as a fate he cannot escape. This is a character-focused recap, not a complete account of every Hyuga rule or custom.

What Neji learned about his father
6. Neji first understands Hizashi’s death as a sacrifice imposed by circumstance
Hizashi died as a body double to prevent renewed war with the Hidden Cloud. Neji’s early understanding of the event is shaped by this account, and by the belief that his branch-family status determined his life. The official column links this part of the story to Naruto Volume 12, Chapter 105, “The Great Flight!!”
7. Hiashi later tells Neji that Hizashi chose to die
After the Chunin Exam, Hiashi explains to Neji that Hizashi chose death to protect his loved ones. That revelation changes the meaning Neji gives his father’s final act: it becomes a choice made for others, rather than only an outcome dictated by the clan hierarchy.

Two abilities that complicate Neji’s place in the clan
8. Neji mastered techniques usually reserved for the main branch
The official column says Neji mastered Eight Trigrams Palms Rotation and Eight Trigrams 64 Palms, techniques it describes as normally known only to main-branch members. His mastery is one way his ability exceeds the limits others might expect from his position.
9. The Byakugan’s vision has a small blind spot
Neji’s Byakugan gives him nearly 360-degree vision, but not literally complete coverage: the official account describes one tiny blind spot. Kidomaru finds it during their fight. The column connects the detail to Naruto Volume 22, Chapter 196, “The Strongest Enemy!!”

10. Neji’s final sacrifice echoes Hizashi’s
Neji dies shielding Naruto and Hinata, and the official recap frames his action as his own choice—not something compelled by his curse mark or branch status. It explicitly connects his decision to Hizashi’s choice to protect his comrades. The scene appears in Naruto Volume 64, Chapter 614, “Because of You.”
That ending gives Neji’s earlier question about fate a lasting answer in his own actions. After Hiashi tells him about Hizashi, Neji says: “FATHER… I STILL CAN’T BE ENTIRELY CERTAIN WHETHER PEOPLE’S FATES SIMPLY COAST ALONG LIKE THE CLOUDS IN THE SKY… …OR IF EACH PERSON CAN CHOOSE HIS OWN PATH TO FOLLOW.” The official column reproduces this line from Volume 12, Chapter 105, and later quotes Neji’s final words to Naruto: “BECAUSE YOU… …CALLED ME…A GENIUS.”
