Naomi Scott’s Hollywood career did not begin with Aladdin. She developed as a singer and songwriter before and alongside her first screen roles, built visibility through Power Rangers (2017), and became widely recognized as Princess Jasmine in Aladdin (2019). Her later work has moved between acting and music, including Smile 2 and her debut album, F.I.G.
Music came before her best-known film roles
Scott sang in church and at school as a teenager. In a 2026 interview with The Guardian, she recalled singing Alicia Keys’s “If I Ain’t Got You” at a Sunday service, where singer Kéllé Bryan noticed her and signed her to a theatre agency. Scott went on to appear in Coca-Cola and Nintendo Wii adverts and work with Xenomania’s Brian Higgins and Miranda Cooper, experiences that helped her develop as a songwriter. The Guardian’s interview offers her account of those early steps.
That background matters to her career story: performance was not simply something she added after becoming an actor. Music was part of her training from the start, and it would later shape both her screen roles and her solo work.
Her first television roles joined acting and singing
Life Bites and Lemonade Mouth
Scott entered the Disney Channel UK series Life Bites at 15, appearing in a regular role in 2008–09. She followed it with Disney Channel musical Lemonade Mouth in 2011, a project that made direct use of her singing as well as her acting. Apple TV’s biography lists these among her early screen credits.

Terra Nova and early film work
Also in 2011, Scott took a regular role in Fox’s science-fiction series Terra Nova. Her film work expanded later: Apple TV lists her feature debut in The 33 (2015) and an appearance in The Martian (2015). These credits show a gradual move across television and film, rather than a career that started with one blockbuster.
Power Rangers put her on Hollywood’s radar
In 2015, Scott was cast as Kimberly Hart, the Pink Ranger, in the Power Rangers reboot film, released in 2017. The role widened her visibility in Hollywood and preceded the part that would make her recognizable to a much broader global audience. As The Guardian describes the sequence, Power Rangers put Scott on Hollywood’s radar, and Aladdin cemented that momentum.

Playing Jasmine made her globally recognizable
Scott played Princess Jasmine in Guy Ritchie’s live-action Aladdin in 2019. The role was a major career step, and the film became a substantial commercial success: The Guardian reported in 2026 that it grossed more than $1 billion and ranked as the ninth biggest film of 2019. Those figures are reported by the newspaper in its interview article.
The casting announcement also drew criticism from some people who objected to what they saw as Hollywood conflating South Asian and Middle Eastern identities. Scott, who is of mixed British and Gujarati Indian descent, told The Guardian that in her experience the backlash quickly receded once filming and release began. That is her account of how the debate affected her; it should not be taken as a claim about how all audiences experienced it.

Charlie’s Angels and a widening filmography
In the same year as Aladdin, Scott played Elena in Elizabeth Banks’s Charlie’s Angels (2019). Later screen work included Olivia Lytton in Netflix’s Anatomy of a Scandal (2022), followed by a return to a role that made her singing central to the performance.
Smile 2 brought acting and singing together again
In Smile 2 (2024), Scott played Skye Riley, a fictional pop star. The role asked her to combine acting with singing in a demanding performance. She described it to The Guardian as “the hardest thing I’ll probably have to do, but very rewarding.” The part made her music background integral to the character rather than a separate element of her career.

Scott began work on her debut album, F.I.G, in 2022, developing it intermittently between Los Angeles and Norway with producer Lido. The Guardian reported on March 5, 2026, that Alter Music had scheduled the album for release on March 20, 2026. That report established the planned release date, but does not confirm the album’s release status or its reception after that date.
Scott has described approaching songwriting with a renewed sense of exploration: “I felt I had to go back to basics, to a childlike writing process,” she told The Guardian. She has also contrasted the collaborative nature of acting with music’s direct authorship: “When you’re acting, you really are like a colour in a painting that’s being utilised, whether that’s by the film-maker or the editor. And with music, you are the artist yourself. You are the painter.”
