What is the latest update on Nancy Guthrie?

In its September 29, 2026 report, the Associated Press said authorities did not consider a recently surfaced possible ransom note credible. The sheriff’s department asked anyone who receives messages about Guthrie to report them to law enforcement and remain alert to scams. The report did not identify an arrest or provide a new determination about her status.

Who is Nancy Guthrie, and when did she go missing?

Nancy Guthrie, 84, is the mother of Today cohost Savannah Guthrie. She was last seen at her home just outside Tucson, Arizona, on January 31, 2026, and was reported missing on February 1, according to the Associated Press.

What has Savannah Guthrie said?

On June 23, 2026, Savannah Guthrie appealed for information from the Today set. The Associated Press reported that she began by saying, “I don’t have any comment on this story. I’m not involved in our coverage,” then added, “But I can’t pretend I’m not here. And since I am, I want to just take the opportunity to ask people — really to beg people — to come forward. Somebody knows something.”

In the same appeal, AP reported her saying, “We are in agony, and we cannot be at peace. … We love our mom. We’ll never stop looking for her.” AP also reported that family members shared public pleas for information in social media videos.

The June appearance documents Savannah’s appeal; the latest located case update is the September 29 AP report. It does not establish that a new update by the Today cohosts aired on that date.

Was the recent ransom note real?

Authorities deemed the possible note that surfaced over the weekend before September 29 not credible, according to AP. That assessment is separate from the contents of two earlier notes authorities released in July. One demanded $4 million in cryptocurrency and claimed Guthrie was safe but scared; another said she had died shortly after being kidnapped. Those conflicting claims do not establish what happened to her.
