“Naatu Naatu” is a song from S.S. Rajamouli’s Telugu-language film RRR, but its celebrated dance is also a piece of story action: two Indian leads turn a social challenge into a duel that lets them out-dance the British characters. M.M. Keeravaani composed the music, Chandrabose wrote the lyrics, Prem Rakshith choreographed the sequence, and Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr. performed it. The song won the 2023 Golden Globe for Best Original Song – Motion Picture and the Academy Award for Best Original Song.
What is the story behind “Naatu Naatu”?
In RRR, a fictional story about two revolutionaries, the dance grows out of a social challenge. The scene pits the Indian leads against British characters, turning the contest into a display of solidarity, showmanship and defiance. Director S.S. Rajamouli told the Associated Press that he wanted the Indian leads to out-dance the British characters. That framing makes the number part of the film’s anti-colonial action rather than a musical interlude detached from the plot.
The song’s title and lyrics evoke rural traditions, food and agriculture, according to lyricist Chandrabose. Its folk-inflected energy serves a scene built around two performers moving in unison while each brings a distinct screen presence.
Who wrote and performed the song?
The Academy credits M.M. Keeravaani with the music and Chandrabose with the lyrics. Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava sing the track; the Academy also announced the two singers as performers at the 95th Oscars.

Chandrabose told NDTV that Rajamouli asked him to write for a specific scene. He prepared three candidate songs, and Rajamouli chose “Naatu Naatu.” Chandrabose said he wrote 90 percent of the lyrics in half a day. The remaining 10 percent took more than one year and seven months, as the rap section was refined across multiple recording sessions. The split between a quick initial draft and a lengthy finish reflects how a song tailored to a particular scene can continue evolving through production.
How was the dance choreographed for both actors?
Rajamouli gave choreographer Prem Rakshith a practical and expressive brief: the steps had to suit both actors, look effective when performed together, be enjoyable, and remain accessible rather than prohibitively difficult. As Rajamouli put it in Vanity Fair’s published scene breakdown, “It should be nice, it shouldn’t be too difficult, it should suit the style of both actors, and it should be fantastic.” He said Rakshith developed more than a hundred variations before settling on the choreography.

That process was about more than matching steps. The dance needed to read clearly as a shared performance while allowing Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr. to bring their own styles to it. Rajamouli described the audience-facing aim this way: “There are two important things—one is that you should really, really enjoy your dance. Only then can the audience really get the enjoyment out of your dance.” Both quotations are Rajamouli’s remarks as quoted by Vanity Fair.
Where was the scene filmed, and how large was the shoot?
The sequence was filmed in Kyiv in August 2021 at Mariinsky Palace, Ukraine’s presidential residence. Vanity Fair’s breakdown says the location was selected to avoid India’s monsoon season. The shoot took 15 days, with around 50 dancers and up to 400 extras, according to the Associated Press’s 2023 report. Those are reported production estimates: “around” and “up to” matter, rather than implying exact head counts.

The location and large ensemble give the duel a formal, public setting: the dance plays out as a spectacle before a crowd, while its central achievement depends on the two leads’ coordinated performance. The scene was filmed before Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Yes. “Naatu Naatu” won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 95th Oscars on March 12, 2023. It also won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song – Motion Picture in 2023. The awards recognize the song; they do not reduce the scene’s success to a single contribution. Its effect brings together Keeravaani’s music, Chandrabose’s lyrics, Sipligunj and Bhairava’s vocals, Rakshith’s choreography, Rajamouli’s direction, and the performances of Charan and Rama Rao Jr.
