Its Oxford atmosphere has a distinctly mid-2010s, autumnal romanticism—the sensibility the supplied title calls “2015 Christian Girl Autumn”—but that phrase is a critical comparison, not a documented trend the film itself references.
What is My Oxford Year about?
Released on Netflix on August 1, 2025, My Oxford Year stars Sofia Carson as Anna, an ambitious American who travels to Oxford to study poetry for a year before an expected job in New York. There she meets Jamie, played by Corey Mylchreest, a Brit whose secret threatens to alter her plans. Netflix describes the film as a romance written by Allison Burnett and Melissa Osborne and directed by Iain Morris. Netflix Tudum’s film announcement and interview and the official Netflix listing confirm the premise and release details.
Does the Oxford romance work?
The film’s appeal is less about the mechanics of Anna’s study year than the promise of Oxford as a romantic setting: poetry, old-world surroundings and a life briefly set apart from ordinary career plans. That combination gives the film its time-machine quality. It recalls a mid-2010s internet aesthetic in which English campuses and autumnal romance could stand in for a carefully curated dream life. The “Christian Girl Autumn” label is useful as a playful frame for that nostalgia, but it should not be mistaken for a verified category of film criticism or evidence of the filmmakers’ intent.
That fantasy is pleasant, but atmosphere cannot do all the work of a love story. The Guardian’s August 1, 2025 review judged the film a “so-so” romance, arguing that its script lacks electricity and leans on anglophilia and sentiment while leaving the leads to supply the spark. That is one critic’s view, not a consensus verdict. My read is that the film’s sentiment and setting make it an agreeable watch when you are in the mood for uncomplicated romantic wish-fulfillment; viewers looking for especially lively dialogue or a more surprising romance may find the writing less persuasive. The Guardian review offers the contrasting critical case.

Is the film faithful to Julia Whelan’s novel?
My Oxford Year is based on Julia Whelan’s novel, but the adaptation’s lineage is more specific than a simple “book turned into screenplay” description suggests. Netflix says the novel was adapted from Allison Burnett’s original screenplay. Its June 2024 announcement credited Burnett as writer with current revisions by Savion Einstein; the 2025 Tudum article credits Burnett and Melissa Osborne. Carson is also an executive producer. The production-stage credits differ, so they should not be collapsed into a single account of how the screenplay developed. About Netflix’s 2024 announcement and Netflix Tudum’s 2025 article document those credits and the adaptation history.
The confirmed relationship establishes that the movie is an adaptation, not how closely it follows the book. Specific claims about changed scenes, characterizations, tone or the ending require a direct comparison of both versions; the available production information does not establish those details. If you want to make that comparison yourself, Whelan’s My Oxford Year is the source novel.
