My Lady Jane Season 1 is an eight-episode Prime Video historical-fantasy comedy—not a faithful biography of Lady Jane Grey. Released in full on June 27, 2024, the series reimagines the Tudor succession crisis as a fast, romantic, openly anachronistic adventure in which Jane becomes an active heroine and shapeshifters known as Ethians are persecuted by the ruling order. Prime Video canceled the series after its first season in August 2024, so the eight released episodes are currently the complete television story.

What is My Lady Jane about?
The series begins with Lady Jane Grey, an exceptionally intelligent and strong-willed young woman caught in a dangerous Tudor succession crisis. Her family attempts to secure her political future through an arranged marriage to Guildford Dudley, a seemingly irresponsible nobleman with a secret that makes the match considerably more complicated: Guildford transforms into a horse.

That supernatural element is part of a larger conflict. The show’s shapeshifting population, called Ethians, can change into animals. They are treated as a threat by powerful people who want to control or eliminate them. Jane’s personal struggle over marriage, power, and independence therefore becomes connected to a broader fight over persecution, succession, and who gets to determine the future of England.
The result is deliberately unlike a conventional Tudor drama. The series uses historical names and the broad circumstances surrounding Edward VI, Jane Grey, Mary Tudor, and the Dudley family, but it changes the personalities, political structures, supernatural rules, relationships, and outcomes. The most accurate description is an alternate Tudor history or historical-fantasy reimagining, not a true story and not a documentary biography.
How the show changes Lady Jane Grey’s history
In real history, Lady Jane Grey became queen in 1553 after the death of Edward VI and held the throne for only a short period before Mary I displaced her. Jane was later executed. My Lady Jane takes that tragic outline and asks what might happen if Jane were given agency, allies, romantic complications, and a chance to fight back.
That change is the show’s central creative promise. Jane is not presented as a passive historical footnote waiting for her fate. She is educated, argumentative, politically capable, and willing to challenge both her family and the institutions around her. The series also uses comedy and direct, playful storytelling to make its revisionist approach unmistakable.

Viewers looking for an accurate account of the Tudor succession should use a biography or history of Jane Grey instead. Viewers willing to treat the period as the setting for a fantastical what-if story will find that the historical departures are the point.

The Ethians and the fantasy premise
The Ethians are the show’s defining piece of worldbuilding. They are people who can shapeshift into animals, and their existence creates a social and political divide that does not belong to the historical Tudor period. Guildford’s transformation into a horse is both a source of comic shock and a serious obstacle to his relationship with Jane.
The fantasy is not simply decorative. Ethian persecution gives the series a second conflict alongside the succession crisis. The characters must navigate prejudice, concealment, violence, and competing claims to power. This lets the show combine a romantic marriage plot with a rebellion story and a critique of inherited authority, while still maintaining its deliberately irreverent tone.

Is My Lady Jane based on a book?
Yes. The series adapts the 2016 YA novel My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows, published by HarperTeen. The book shares the broad comic revision of Jane Grey’s story, the romantic focus, and the fantasy idea of shapeshifting E∂ians—the spelling used in the novel. The television series consistently uses Ethian for its shapeshifting population.

Where to watch Season 1
The complete eight-episode season is listed on Prime Video’s official My Lady Jane page. The cited U.S. listing identifies the title as available through Prime Video, subject to subscription and territory terms. Availability, pricing, trial eligibility, age ratings, and content labels can change, so viewers outside the United States should check their local Prime Video catalog.
The listing identifies the program as English-language and offers multiple subtitle and dubbed-audio options. It also displays a 16+ advisory and warnings for violence, nudity, sexual content, alcohol use, foul language, and flashing or strobing imagery. Those labels may vary by territory.
Why the series stands out
My Lady Jane works from a combination that is unusual even within historical fantasy:
- Revisionist history: It takes a famously tragic royal story and gives its heroine a more active role.
- Romance: Jane and Guildford’s arranged marriage develops into the emotional center of the season.
- Comedy: The tone is playful and knowingly anachronistic rather than solemn or strictly period-authentic.
- Fantasy: Ethian shapeshifting changes the social and political stakes.
- Adventure: The story moves between court intrigue, danger outside the palace, escape attempts, and confrontations.
- Agency-centered characterization: Jane is defined by her intelligence, resistance, and willingness to make decisions rather than simply endure history.
That blend is also the most useful way to set expectations. Someone seeking a serious, historically precise Tudor drama may find the liberties too broad. Someone looking for a romantic fantasy with court politics and a comic voice is much closer to the intended audience.

Reception
Critical and audience response was broadly favorable in the available cited data. Rotten Tomatoes listed Season 1 at 95% from 38 critics and 91% audience approval from more than 1,000 ratings at the time of the research. Those numbers are dynamic and should be checked again before publication or quoted as a current score.
The recurring positive angle was the show’s unusual genre mixture: romantic chemistry, feminist or agency-focused characterization, comic narration, action, historical setting, and supernatural worldbuilding. That favorable reception should not be confused with evidence that the series became a major streaming hit. The available cancellation reporting noted that it did not appear on Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 streaming charts during its initial run.
Why was My Lady Jane canceled?
Prime Video canceled My Lady Jane after one season in August 2024. TVLine reported on August 16, 2024 that the cancellation had been confirmed and connected the decision with the series’ failure to appear on Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 streaming charts.
That means Season 2 is not forthcoming, in production, or merely delayed according to the cited reporting. The first-season finale leaves room for additional political and character stories, but an open ending is not the same as a renewal. Fan enthusiasm or petitions should not be described as having changed the official status unless a new, authoritative announcement is made.

Season 1 resolves the immediate execution and succession crisis at the center of its story and gives Jane a decisive final confrontation. It also leaves enough room for further adventures involving the characters, the court, and the Ethian conflict. Because the series was canceled, those possibilities remain unrealized rather than forming the confirmed setup for a second season.
Best Value
Is My Lady Jane worth watching?
It is a strong choice if you want a short, completed first season that mixes Tudor-inspired court intrigue with romance, comedy, action, and shapeshifting fantasy. The eight-episode structure makes it easy to watch as a single story, and the central premise is clear from the beginning: this is an imaginative alternative to Jane Grey’s real fate.
Approach it with the right expectations. Do not watch it as a historical lesson or a faithful biography. Watch it as a lively “what if?”—one that uses the Tudor period, famous names, and a tragic historical starting point to build a more rebellious and hopeful fantasy adventure.

Bottom line: My Lady Jane Season 1 is best understood as a completed eight-episode alternate Tudor fantasy: funny, romantic, politically charged, and intentionally unfaithful to the historical record. It is available through the cited Prime Video listing, but Prime Video canceled the series after one season in August 2024, so viewers should not expect a Season 2.
