Spoiler note: This review discusses the themes and place in the story of episode 170, but avoids a scene-by-scene recap. The TV series finale gives My Hero Academia an emotionally complete ending by framing heroism as a shared responsibility that continues beyond the story’s central struggle. Its emphasis on collective legacy feels fitting for a series built around an ensemble, even if its forward-looking promise may leave some viewers wanting more immediate closure.
What episode 170 is—and what it covers
Episode 170, titled “僕のヒーローアカデミア” (“My Hero Academia”), is the TV series finale. The official episode listing dates it December 13, 2025, and credits Yosuke Kuroda with the script, Naomi Nakayama with the storyboard, and Masayuki Otsuka with direction. Official episode listing
The episode adapts the manga through chapter 430. It is not the adaptation of chapter 431, “More”: that material, collected at the end of manga Volume 42, received a separate TV special. Official announcement about the chapter 431 special
A finale about reaching out, not just winning
The official synopsis gives the episode’s governing idea: “これは僕たちが 最高のヒーローになった物語。そして 皆といつまでも手を差し伸べ続ける物語。ここが 僕の 僕たちの ヒーローアカデミア。” A close rendering is: “This is the story of how we became the greatest heroes. And the story of how we will continue to reach out to everyone forever. This is my, our, My Hero Academia.” The Japanese is the authoritative text; subtitle choices may vary. Official episode listing

That framing shifts the measure of an ending away from a final victory alone. Becoming a hero matters, but so does continuing to notice people who need help. In my reading, this is an earned destination for a long-running ensemble story: the language of “we” makes the conclusion feel like a collective achievement rather than a story that belongs only to its central hero. “Forever” also keeps the ending open in a purposeful way. The characters’ lives can continue without the series needing to narrate every next step.
The official pre-finale visual reinforces that communal emphasis. It brings together 23 characters, including Class 1-A, teacher Shota Aizawa, and All Might, under the tagline “ここが、僕たちのヒーローアカデミア” (“This is our My Hero Academia”). The announcement described the image as bright and smiling. Official pre-finale announcement The visual is a concise statement of the finale’s priorities: this ending belongs to a community shaped by the story, not only to one person’s journey.

Does the ending feel complete?
It offers thematic closure more clearly than it closes off the characters’ futures. That distinction is a strength if what you want is a final statement about what heroism means; it may feel less satisfying if you expected the finale to settle every question about what happens next. The promise to keep reaching out is both the point and the opening left behind.
That balance helps explain why individual reactions can differ. GamesRadar+’s review, published December 13, 2025, reads the finale as the capstone to Deku’s journey and praises the ensemble and the show’s earnestness. GamesRadar+ review In one anime-only discussion thread, viewers offered contrasting reactions: one wrote, “I legit cried during this episode,” while another said “it still feels incomplete.” A commenter’s phrase “OUR hero academia” echoes the communal framing. The difference is not necessarily a disagreement about whether the story has value. A viewer moved by the characters’ shared legacy may experience the ending as emotionally complete, while someone looking for more of their lives may experience the same forward-looking quality as incompleteness. Both reactions fit an ending that closes on a theme and leaves room for continuation.

The official announcement separates the TV finale from the additional manga material: episode 170 reaches chapter 430, while the special adapts chapter 431, “More,” collected in Volume 42. It describes “More” as following Deku and the rest of Class 1-A further into their professional-hero lives, eight years after graduating from U.A. The announcement gave May 2, 2026 as the Japan broadcast date on Yomiuri TV/Nippon TV affiliates, with some regional exclusions. That was the announced broadcast information; it does not establish current on-demand availability. Official announcement about the chapter 431 special
