My Dateless Diary is R. K. Narayan’s nonfiction journal of a nine-month visit to the United States in 1956. It is less a guide to America than a comic, personal record of one South Indian writer negotiating unfamiliar routines—and a chance to see Narayan observing the world, including himself.
What is My Dateless Diary about?
Narayan travelled in the United States on a Rockefeller Fellowship and kept a daily journal, initially without intending to publish it. The book appeared in 1964. Its episodes follow a visitor encountering everyday customs that do not come naturally to him: figuring out how to get served in a self-service cafeteria, navigating unfamiliar roads and travel practices, and trying to find vegetarian food.
The diary ranges beyond meals and transportation to coffee, parties, parking, public transit, the United Nations and the freeway landscape shaped by automobiles. Its subject is not America in the abstract so much as Narayan’s encounters with particular people, places and habits.
Why did Narayan call it autobiographical?
In the foreword to the 1988 edition, Narayan said he did not know how to classify the book. He wrote: “I don’t know how to classify this book. It is not a book of information on America, nor is it a study of American culture. It is mainly autobiographical, full of ‘I’ over a short period of time in relation to some moments, scenes and personalities.”

That description helps set expectations: the diary’s centre is the traveller’s point of view. Its charm lies in the small collisions between a familiar routine and an unfamiliar one, and in Narayan’s willingness to make his own confusion part of the comedy.
What makes the travel writing funny?
Narayan pays attention to the practical details that can make travel awkward: where to stand, how a meal is served, how to get around, and what to do when the expected food is not available. Oindrila Mukherjee’s 2015 Scroll.in feature describes the writing as comic and alert to human eccentricities, including the author’s own. The humour comes from close observation rather than from treating every encounter as a grand cultural lesson.

That perspective also makes the book a document of its moment. Some of Narayan’s contrasts and generalizations can sound condescending or narrow today. They are best read as one traveller’s impressions, formed in a particular time and place—not as universal truths about Americans or Indians.
What was Narayan working on during the trip?
Mukherjee’s 2015 feature reports that Narayan wrote 1,500 to 2,000 words a day during the journey and was working on a manuscript that became The Guide. The daily word-count figure is the feature’s account of his routine; it is not a readership or sales statistic.

Is My Dateless Diary worth reading?
Yes, especially for readers interested in Narayan beyond his fiction or in travel writing built from everyday encounters. The book offers a personable view of its author at work and in unfamiliar surroundings, with humour rooted in the ordinary complications of being a visitor. Readers looking for a comprehensive or up-to-date account of American culture should look elsewhere: Narayan himself rejected that description of the book, and its judgments belong to its historical perspective.
