The launch-era idea was to let children customize a physical doll, then use a code from its box to unlock matching digital looks. But in August 2022, WowWee said it had voluntarily disassociated the product from Roblox after receiving a cease-and-desist letter. WowWee’s product page still refers to an online game; the available sources do not confirm that it is the original Roblox experience or that the doll codes still work.
What are My Avastars?
My Avastars is a customizable fashion-doll franchise announced by toy maker WowWee with Roblox-game developer Gamefam on June 21, 2022. Its design centers on changing a doll’s appearance with mix-and-match clothes, hair, shoes and reusable stickers, echoing the way players customize avatars in games. The first characters announced were KawaiiPie^^, A_VibeThng and Dreamer_3.0. WowWee’s launch announcement described the line as a fashion-doll franchise born from the metaverse.
WowWee’s current My Avastars product page describes an 11-inch doll packaged with multiple clothing items, shoes, hair, reusable stickers and a collector card. The styling play includes outfit changes, face and tattoo stickers, and clothing decals. WowWee says each box allows more than 100 possible looks; that is the company’s figure, not an independently measured count.
How was the doll supposed to connect to Roblox?
In the 2022 launch plan, every doll would include a code for My Avastars: RP, a Roblox roleplaying experience developed with Gamefam. WowWee said players could bring their dolls into the virtual game and redeem digital fashions, hairstyles and facial features. The code and game were presented as a bridge between the physical toy and digital avatar customization—not as proof that every physical accessory had a matching in-game item.

WowWee VP of Marketing and Operations Andrew Yanofsky explained the physical design as a contrast to dolls molded to a fixed ideal: the block-like shape, flat surfaces and peel-and-repeat stickers were intended to invite children to alter and rearrange the dolls as they did their avatars. Gamefam founder and CEO Joe Ferencz called it the first time a toy and Roblox game had been developed concurrently; that was his promotional characterization, not an independently established industry milestone. The announcement also quoted WowWee VP Sydney Wiseman on the company’s aim to serve customers beyond the action-figure-and-blaster category it associated with gaming toys.
What changed after the launch announcement?
On August 3, 2022, WowWee said Roblox had sent it a cease-and-desist letter and that WowWee had voluntarily disassociated My Avastars from Roblox. That is WowWee’s account of the company’s response, not a neutral finding about the dispute. In the same statement, WowWee described its goal as bringing children offline through a hybrid model that used avatar customization in physical play. WowWee’s statement also said Roblox had filed suit against the company in 2022.

The current WowWee product page continues to say that the fun carries on in a free online game, but it does not establish that this game is hosted on Roblox. Nor do the available sources confirm that launch-era physical codes can still be redeemed. Treat the Roblox integration as a historical plan, not a currently verified feature.

A September 3, 2024 order in the federal case discussed My Avastars, Roblox’s terms and the parties’ arguments. In the cited passage, the court said the terms in effect when the dolls launched did not clearly prohibit the dolls’ creation, but also did not expressly permit it. The court granted summary judgment on a particular affirmative defense as to copyright and trade-dress claims. That limited ruling does not establish that Roblox broadly authorized the dolls, and it should not be read as a complete account of the case’s final outcome. The court order is the primary source for that legal discussion.
