Universal Pictures currently lists the Jamie Lee Curtis Murder, She Wrote film for theatrical release on February 4, 2028. Curtis is set to play Jessica Fletcher, the role Angela Lansbury made famous. This is a feature film, not the small-screen reboot that was proposed earlier and later scrapped. Beyond Curtis and the film’s creative team, the sources available for this article do not establish a plot, a wider cast, or a filming schedule.

How the film differs from the Octavia Spencer proposal
Before Curtis’s film was announced, a reboot was proposed as a television series with Octavia Spencer attached. According to The Guardian’s March 2026 report, that project was scrapped. Spencer is not part of the Curtis feature, and the two should not be treated as the same project.
The Guardian also reports Lansbury’s objection to using the Murder, She Wrote title for the earlier proposal. She said:

“I think it’s a mistake to call it Murder, She Wrote because Murder, She Wrote will always be about Cabot Cove and this wonderful little group of people who told those lovely stories and enjoyed a piece of that place, and also enjoyed Jessica Fletcher, who is a rare and very individual kind of person,”
The Guardian’s account adds that Lansbury later called the earlier proposal “a terrible mistake” and said she was “terribly pleased and relieved” when it was scrapped. These remarks concern the earlier television proposal, not the Curtis film.

The original series
The original series, which ran on CBS, follows mystery writer Jessica Fletcher, played by Angela Lansbury. She leaves her home in Cabot Cove, Maine, and becomes a real-life detective. Universal Pictures’ catalog and The Guardian’s 2026 report both identify 12 seasons, which ran from 1984 to 1996 according to The Guardian. Universal lists the complete series at a runtime of 209 hours, 40 minutes.
The Guardian’s 2026 report gives the series a peak of 25 million viewers a week. That is the newspaper’s figure, not one drawn from a separately cited ratings record.
