Munawwar Rana was an Indian poet who wrote in Urdu and Hindi, and his ghazal “Maa” became the work most closely associated with him. Born in Rae Bareli in 1952 and later based in Lucknow, he also wrote across a wider body of poetry, appeared in mushairas in India and abroad, and received the Sahitya Akademi award for his Urdu collection Shahdaba in 2014.
Who was Munawwar Rana?
Munawwar Rana, whose real name Rekhta records as Sayed Munawwar Ali, was born on 26 November 1952 in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh. He died in Lucknow on 14 January 2024. Rekhta describes him as a poet in both Hindi and Urdu and notes his prominence in mushaira circles in India and abroad. Mushairas—poetry gatherings where poets recite their work—were an important public setting for his poetry.
Rana’s reach cannot be measured from the available bibliographic records, and no dependable readership or circulation figure is established here. His public identity is instead especially bound to the emotional directness of “Maa,” alongside his collections and his work in the ghazal tradition.
What is Munawwar Rana’s poem “Maa” about?
“Maa” places a mother at the emotional center of a ghazal. Rekhta calls it Rana’s most famous poem; its catalog entry for the Urdu collection Maan also says that the collection’s writing on “Maa” is especially popular and that the ghazal appeared in Urdu, Hindi, and Bengali. These records establish its close association with Rana’s public image, but do not establish a first publication date or a definitive history of its translations.

One couplet shown on Rana’s Rekhta profile conveys the poem’s sense of a mother as an inheritance:
kisi ko ghar mila hisse mein ya koi dukaan aai
main ghar mein sab se chhota tha mere hisse mein maan aai
This is a short excerpt, not the complete poem. Roman Urdu spellings can vary.
Rana described his approach to ghazal in a statement reproduced on the Rekhta page for Maan: “میں تو آپ بیتی کو جگ بیتی اور جگ بیتی کو آپ بیتی کے لباس سے آراستہ کرکے غزل بناتا ہوں۔” A working English rendering is: “I turn personal narrative into collective narrative, and collective narrative into personal narrative, dressing them as ghazal.” The English is a translation for comprehension, not a verified published translation. The statement helps explain how a personal subject such as a mother can also speak to a wider audience.

The Sahitya Akademi’s official award list records Munawwar Rana’s Shahdaba in the Urdu poetry category for 2014. That recognition sits alongside, rather than in place of, the public association between Rana and “Maa”: one reflects a formal award listing for a collection, the other the singular prominence of a ghazal in his public image.
