Mufasa: The Lion King is a 2024 prequel-style chapter about the young lion’s rise and his bond with Taka, the future Scar. Directed by Barry Jenkins, the film links that origin story to the wider saga through Rafiki’s flashback account to Kiara. Disney reported more than $700 million in worldwide box-office receipts, but that commercial success alone does not establish a lasting cultural legacy.
What is Mufasa: The Lion King about?
Disney frames the story as Rafiki telling Mufasa’s legend to Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala. In the flashbacks, Mufasa begins as an orphaned cub and meets Taka, an heir to a royal bloodline. Their journey tests their friendship as they face a dangerous enemy. That setup makes the film an origin story and prequel-style installment, while its framing characters connect it to the broader Lion King story.

Who made the film, and who voices its characters?
Barry Jenkins directed. Aaron Pierre voices Mufasa, Kelvin Harrison Jr. voices Taka, and Blue Ivy Carter voices Kiara. Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the original songs, and Dave Metzger composed the score. Disney describes the production as combining live-action filmmaking techniques with photoreal computer-generated imagery.

When did it come out, and is it on Disney+?
The film opened in U.S. theaters on December 20, 2024. Disney announced that it would begin streaming on Disney+ on March 26, 2025. That announced launch date has passed; availability can vary by country and over time, so check the Disney+ title page for current access in your region.

How did it perform at the box office?
Disney said in its March 11, 2025 streaming announcement that the film had earned “over $700 million at the global box office” and ranked among the top ten global releases of 2024. These are the studio’s reported figures, not an independently audited estimate cited here. A large gross demonstrates commercial reach; it does not by itself show whether the film will endure as a cultural landmark.

What did critics think?
Reviews were not simply a reflection of Disney’s promotional framing. Associated Press critic Lindsey Bahr gave the film two and a half stars out of four, rated it PG, and listed a runtime of 118 minutes. Bahr praised Jenkins’s visual ambition and the value of telling an original story, writing that “Mufasa: The Lion King” has one very important thing going for it: an original story. She also found the photorealistic speaking and singing animals numbing and argued that the comedy and songs interrupt the central story. Those are one critic’s judgments, not a measure of universal response.
