Spoilers for 2024’s Mufasa: The Lion King. The film ends its origin story by returning to the present-day frame: Rafiki has been telling Simba and Nala’s daughter, Kiara, about her grandfather. Its central reveal is how Mufasa’s early bond with Taka becomes the story of Mufasa and Scar—the king and rival audiences already know from The Lion King.
What happened at the end of Mufasa: The Lion King?
The ending connects Mufasa’s rise to the family that remembers him. Rafiki’s account is told to Kiara, so the origin story is not just about how a king came to be: it is also a story passed from one generation to the next. Disney describes the film’s framing device as Rafiki telling Mufasa’s story to Kiara, with the past unfolding in flashbacks (Disney’s film page; Disney’s production notes).
The emotional turn is the contrast between Mufasa, remembered as a king, and Taka, whose earlier identity becomes Scar. Their relationship begins with a connection framed around belonging and family, but it unravels into betrayal. The film’s setup supports reading that change through kinship, status and loyalty; it does not reduce Taka’s transformation to one simple cause. The Associated Press likewise describes the story in terms of found family and betrayal, an interpretation rather than a scene-by-scene account of the final act (AP review).
What happened before The Lion King?
Disney’s synopsis begins with Mufasa as an orphaned cub who meets Taka, an heir to a royal bloodline. Rafiki tells the story to Kiara through flashbacks (Disney’s film page). The Associated Press reports that Mufasa has been separated from his family and that Taka brings him into his own family; actor Aaron Pierre described Mufasa’s backstory as one of separation and rejection in an interview with the AP (AP report).

- Follow the epic tale of the unlikely rise of the Pride Lands? beloved king. An orphaned Mufasa is lost and alone until he meets Taka, heir to a royal bloodline. This launches an epic journey that tests the pair?s bonds as they evade a deadly foe.
In this 2024 film’s origin account, Taka is the earlier identity of the character later known as Scar. The story expands the relationship between Taka and Mufasa and shows it breaking down. That is the film’s chosen account of their past, not a guarantee that every older tie-in or adaptation follows identical continuity. The Los Angeles Times identifies the movie as a prequel to both the 1994 animated film and the 2019 remake (Los Angeles Times explainer).
Why does Taka become Scar?
The film gives Taka a past and a changing relationship with Mufasa; it does not make a single event a complete explanation for who he becomes. Taka’s royal status and his bond with Mufasa are part of the story’s setup, while betrayal and the collapse of that bond are central themes in contemporary coverage. It is more accurate to see the change as an arc than to claim that one moment definitively “makes” Taka evil.

Are Mufasa and Scar brothers in this film?
The film presents Mufasa and Taka as connected through family: Taka, a royal heir, brings the orphaned Mufasa into his family. Their relationship is therefore framed through a family bond, though the available official synopsis does not spell out every detail of that bond. The useful distinction is that this 2024 origin story expands their connection; it should not be treated as proof that every version of The Lion King shares one seamless continuity.
How does Mufasa connect to The Lion King?
Mufasa: The Lion King is a prequel to the later story familiar from the 1994 animated film and the 2019 remake. It looks backward to Mufasa’s origins and to Taka’s earlier identity, while the audience already knows the figures they will become: Mufasa the king and Scar his rival. The film’s return to Kiara’s generation provides the bridge forward, placing Mufasa’s story within the family history she is hearing.

What happens after Mufasa?
In the franchise timeline, the later The Lion King story follows the events audiences already associate with Mufasa and Scar. The ending of the 2024 film links its origin account to that familiar story; it does not, by itself, establish additional future events for Kiara or promise a sequel. Its clearest forward connection is the legacy carried by Rafiki’s telling.
