La surfista italiana Giulia Manfrini, de 36 años, murió el 18 de octubre de 2024 después de que un pez la hiriera en el pecho mientras surfeaba en las islas Mentawai, Indonesia. La especie no quedó establecida de forma independiente: una autoridad regional dijo que era un pez espada, mientras que el resort donde se alojaba y su pareja afirmaron que era un pez aguja.
Qué le pasó a Giulia Manfrini
Manfrini estaba surfeando en aguas de las islas Mentawai cuando un pez saltó y la hirió en el pecho. Según The Washington Post, que atribuyó el dato a Lahmudin Siregar, jefe interino de la Agencia Regional de Gestión de Desastres de las Islas Mentawai, la herida medía cinco centímetros.
Testigos la sacaron del agua y le prestaron primeros auxilios. Un médico intentó reanimarla y luego fue trasladada para recibir atención en un hospital cercano, pero no sobrevivió. El relato del rescate procede de declaraciones del resort recogidas por The Washington Post; Massimo Ferro, pareja de Manfrini, también describió esfuerzos de reanimación y una pérdida importante de sangre en una entrevista publicada por Infobae.
¿Fue un pez aguja o un pez espada?
Las versiones publicadas discrepan y no permiten presentar una especie como una identificación verificada. Siregar dijo a la agencia indonesia Antara que un pez espada saltó hacia Manfrini y la golpeó en el pecho, según The Washington Post. Hidden Bay Resort identificó al animal como un pez aguja, y Ferro sostuvo en Infobae: “No fue un pez espada el que la atravesó”.

El Washington Post explica que los peces espada y los peces aguja tienen mandíbulas alargadas, pero pertenecen a familias distintas. Esa semejanza no resuelve qué animal estuvo implicado en este caso; por eso, la forma más precisa de describirlo es mantener ambas versiones atribuidas.
Dónde ocurrió el accidente
El accidente ocurrió en el archipiélago de las Mentawai, frente a la costa occidental de Sumatra, Indonesia. El Universal, en una información de EFE publicada el 19 de octubre de 2024, precisó que sucedió en aguas de Pulau Masokut, cerca de Sumatra. Mentawai nombra el archipiélago; Pulau Masokut, la isla concreta señalada por esa cobertura.

Quién era Giulia Manfrini
Manfrini era una deportista italiana que practicó esquí y snowboard antes de dedicar sus últimos años al surf. Se graduó en Derecho en la Universidad de Turín y cofundó Awave, una agencia de viajes deportivos, junto con James Colston, según EFE y The Washington Post.
Tras su muerte, Colston publicó un homenaje. En una declaración reproducida por The Washington Post escribió: “We believe she died doing what she loved, in a place that she loved.” El alcalde de Venaria Reale, localidad asociada a Manfrini, dijo que la noticia había dejado a la comunidad conmocionada e impotente, según Antena 3.
