Rice murió el sábado 15 de junio de 2024 en Faleloa, en Ha’apai, Tonga. Según informó ABC Pacific, estaba haciendo apnea desde una embarcación. Su padre, Darren Rice, confirmó el fallecimiento a Matangi Tonga.

Quién era J.J. Rice

Rice también quería acercar la vela a los niños tonganos. En una entrevista con That Pacific Sports Show, reproducida por ABC Pacific, habló de una posible subvención para iniciar una pequeña escuela de vela y de la esperanza de ayudar a jóvenes a llegar a los próximos Juegos. París 2024 fue la primera edición olímpica en incluir el kitefoil. Rice no participó en esos Juegos: avanzar a la ronda final de clasificación no equivalía a ganar una plaza olímpica.
Qué es el kitefoil
El kitefoil, llamado Formula Kite en el programa olímpico, es una modalidad de vela en la que una cometa impulsa una tabla equipada con un hidroala. Al elevar la tabla sobre el agua, el hidroala reduce el contacto con la superficie. ABC Pacific señaló que los competidores podían superar aproximadamente los 50 km/h; esa cifra describe a los kitefoilers en general, no una marca personal de Rice.

La reacción en Tonga
La muerte de Rice conmocionó a la comunidad deportiva tongana. Netina Latu Vea, secretaria general de Tonga Sports Association and National Olympic Committee, contó a ABC Pacific que tuvo que confirmar la noticia porque no podía creerla. El vínculo de Rice con Tonga, su trayectoria en el deporte y su interés en abrir oportunidades de vela para jóvenes formaban parte de su historia más allá de la clasificación olímpica.
