In Naomi Datta’s review for Scroll, Twinkle Khanna’s Mrs Funnybones Returns is at its most affecting when it leaves the jokes behind. Its familiar comic voice and domestic anecdotes will appeal to readers who enjoyed the first book, but Datta finds the sequel’s most memorable writing in a personal chapter about Khanna’s late father, actor Rajesh Khanna.
What kind of book is Mrs Funnybones Returns?
Published by Juggernaut, Mrs Funnybones Returns is a sequel to Khanna’s 2015 debut, Mrs Funnybones, which grew out of her newspaper column. The sequel returns to short, quirky chapters and the family circle familiar from the first book, while taking up later-life subjects: the children are older, Khanna considers the empty nest, and she writes about friendship, marriage and returning to university for a master’s degree in fiction writing.
Datta describes 26 chapters. Their domestic observations and self-deprecating humor make the book a continuation rather than a reinvention. The Scroll excerpt on marriage offers a sample of the banter and exaggeration, but it is one passage, not a guide to the tone of every chapter. Read the Scroll excerpt.
Why does the reflective writing stand out?
Datta’s clearest example is the chapter “Father’s Day, for Me, Will Always Be In December,” about Khanna’s relationship with her father, Rajesh Khanna. She calls it loving, honest and moving. In her assessment, the chapter gains power because it does not have to keep supplying wisecracks.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That contrast shapes Datta’s overall judgment: the sequel’s reflective passages work better than its comedy. The humor remains recognizable, but she finds some jokes overworked or uneven. She also wanted Khanna to say more about her return to university, an experience that could have taken the book beyond its familiar domestic material.
Is it a good choice if you liked the first book?
If what you liked was Khanna’s conversational voice, quick chapters and observations about family life, the sequel offers a comfortable return. Datta calls it an easy, consistent comfort read for people who follow Khanna’s column and writing. Its appeal is familiarity, with occasional more serious turns—not a major shift in style.

If you want a substantial change in approach, or comedy that is consistently fresh, Datta’s review suggests tempering expectations. The sequel keeps the original’s basic tone and structure, while adding the perspective of older children, the empty nest and a more personal family reminiscence.
