Mrs Deshpande has a compelling hook: a convicted serial killer helps police hunt someone repeating her crimes. Madhuri Dixit gives the Hindi thriller a magnetic centre, but the show’s fascination with its star often outweighs the work of making Seema Deshpande a fully realized character or building a persuasive mystery.
What is Mrs Deshpande about?
The six-episode Hindi crime thriller follows Seema Deshpande (Madhuri Dixit), a convicted serial killer whose earlier crimes appear to be echoed by a new string of murders. Commissioner Arun Khatri (Priyanshu Chatterjee) turns to Seema for help, while inspector Tejas Phadke (Siddharth Chandekar) leads the investigation and has a personal connection to her.
The series adapts the 2017 French thriller La Mante (The Mantis). Coverage of the Hindi adaptation points to family dynamics and Indian context as part of its approach; that alone does not establish how closely it follows the French series scene by scene.
Does Madhuri Dixit make the role work?
Dixit is the show’s clearest asset. Her composed screen presence gives Seema an immediate pull, and the contrast between a polished public image and a person with a violent past supplies much of the tension. The performance can be haunting, as India Today reviewer Shweta Keshri puts it: “Overall, the series is engaging, though predictable in parts, and powered by Madhuri Dixit’s haunting performance.”

But that appeal also points to the show’s central limitation. Scroll reviewer Nandini Ramnath argues that the series leans on the idea of Dixit as a serial killer without probing Seema deeply enough, writing: “In reality, she is Madhuri Dixit.” The line captures a problem of emphasis: the star’s recognisable presence can eclipse the character the story needs viewers to understand.
Is Seema a convincing character?
The series offers the outline of a potentially complex figure—a convicted killer brought back into an investigation that resembles her own crimes—but does not consistently give that outline psychological depth. Seema is intriguing as a premise and a screen presence; the writing is less successful at making her inner life, motives and contradictions feel as compelling as the mystery around her.
The Indian Express similarly praises Dixit’s fit for an unconventional role while finding the character flatly written and her menace intermittent. That distinction matters: a performer can make a scene watchable without the script giving the character enough dimension to sustain the story.
Does the copycat mystery hold together?
The investigation provides momentum, but the reviews identify familiar weaknesses in its construction. India Today finds the series engaging while noting predictable twists and scenes that run long. Moneycontrol describes an uneven mystery, pointing to convenient plotting, too few clues and an abrupt resolution.

Those criticisms suggest a thriller that relies more on the premise and its lead than on steadily earned discoveries. The central question—who is repeating Seema’s methods?—can draw a viewer forward, but predictability and thin clue work limit the satisfaction of following the investigation.

Who should watch Mrs Deshpande?
It is a reasonable pick for viewers drawn to Dixit’s screen presence, serial-killer premises or Indian crime dramas, especially if they are content with a performance-led thriller rather than a tightly engineered whodunit. Viewers looking for a deeply developed killer protagonist or a clue-rich, consistently surprising investigation may find the writing less satisfying than the setup promises.
